Edit: the sub is an AQ HDC315 with an Fs of 38 Hz For that sub check: http://www.audioque.com/Box-Sizes-and-Tuning-_ep_68.html One they recommend: 3.5 cuft net internal, 56.0 sq" vent area x 20" long. for a single of their 15" subs. If you provide external dims I can give you a design suggestion or you can try the Torres calculator to make your own. In a larger context try the free WinISD software and read their help to learn a bit about enclosure design.

mlstrass Posted January 17, 2012 Report Posted January 17, 2012 Do NOT build a 3.5^3 net box for an HDC 15 as they like larger enclosures. How much power will you have and what music do you mostly play? that will help to determine box size and tuning. I like 35-38Hz for daily set ups and 4.25 - 4.5cubes net for 15's.

You might be alright with the generic 38hz tuning AQ provides, but your best bet would be to design around the sub AND vehicle(e.g. transfer function) for your particular listening goals.

Fs is just the drivers natural resonant frequency in free air. If you tune too far below it, you can get a dip in the output between the driver Fs and port tuning frequencies. Nothing to worry about in a car, but if you used a driver with a 38 Hz Fs in a home theater sub with a port tuned to 18 Hz, there would be a dip in the response between those 2 freequencies. Current system: 1997 Blazer - (4) Customer Fi NEO subs with (8) American Bass Elite 2800.1s Previous systems: 2000 Suburban - (4) BTL 15's and (4) IA 40.1's = 157.7 dB at 37 Hz. 1992 Astro Van - (6) BTL 15's and (6) IA 40.1's = 159.7 dB at 43 Hz.
