Wicks
Welp, I really wanted to tear apart this Mechman and take a look inside. Didn't have a soldering iron large enough to melt the solder at the stator terminals. Sooo I went to eBay and found this monster (200W): Still wasn't enough. It was starting to slowly heat up the solder joint but was melting the casing around it too much. I wanted to desolder that joint but the process was just tearing up the interconnection too much. I didn't want to further damage the alternator and have to fork over more money to rebuild other parts.... So...I packaged it all up and sent it off for repair. I've also mentioned around the forum that my 360.3 has been very flaky. I think I've tracked down the issue but will take some effort to replace the faulty component. When the weather shapes up I'll dive in and swap it out and let you guys know what I find. Hopefully I can get these little problems fixed up so I can concentrate on my trunk updates! Wicks
dude? are those not WELDED ? i dont think its solder but maybe im stoned..... and i am Nope...they're soldered: Its some heavy copper and soldered all around the leads. So to slide off the diode-connection-plate (or whatever the hell its called), you have to remove ALL the solder from the stator windings....which is a bitch. That thing is fucking huge lol It is a bit scary....LOL I fired it up at work for the fun of it and it started smoking, as some heating elements do, so I had to shut err down and take it home to my garage to mess with it. Took about an hour to cool off enough to be able to toss it in the car and take it home.... Bump4life
its an art to get those stator leads desoldered from the rectifier plate. they have a machine to do it in the bigger places. they pretty much dip into a pool of solder and it comes off very easy. im surprised a big company like mechman hasnt invested into a welder with how many units they put out. must just be easier to fix when they fail. then again ive had no issue cutting into the spot welds with a dremel. idk the heat of that iron but the tip looks big enough. i use an american beauty 1200 degree iron with a 5/8 inch tip and it does the job on my silvel solder those diodes look like goners. if they dont cover it let me know. i think i have some 70 amp press fit diodes laying around that wont burn up on you Buyer/Seller Feedback Thread: http://www.stevemead...5015-bump4life/ MB C220 153 Trunk Car Build Log: http://www.stevemead...d/#entry1840136 MB C280 Ipad Dash SQ Build Log: http://www.stevemeadedesigns.com/board/topic/194484-bump4lifes-new-benz-tony-c-relay-kit-pictures-ce-electric-audison-front-stage-installed/ My SPL Log: http://www.stevemead...__fromsearch__1 BMW M340 xDrive Stock, for now. I'm sure I could have gotten it if I put enough time into it. The plastic housing around the stator windings was starting to melt and i just didn't feel like destroying more stuff to tear it apart...and then have Mechman charge me more to fix it since its out of warranty. Yep...6 of the 12 diodes are shorted. It'll be interesting to hear what Mechman thinks caused them to short. It's been cold lately and I haven't been pushing it very hard at all. 70A diodes......nice! I'll keep that in mind. goodvibez
Hope they warranty it for ya...if not just send it to singer...hung out with him last week for a week and watched him fix a "few" Mechmans with his components and all I can say is...yeah The guy knows whats up and uses the right compenents from the getgo...you get what you payfor...my next build will be singer'd out for sure! Not to mention just an awesome guy to talk to and has amazing customer service and could probably go on for another page about it. hope you get it figured out. Funny how the people who have a louder system than you will usually give you a compliment about your setup because they know how much blood, sweat, time, and money you put into it. The people who criticize or try and one up you....have a p.o.s to no system at all and will tell you all about this "other" guys system! Saddley I'm sure if I meet this "other" guy...he will probably tell me he thinks your just as annoying as I think you are! I'm not compensating, just proud of fabricating! Blue
DC power uses a big solder iron and compressed air to desolder those joints formerly known as Blue86f150 its a 4th order just because its tuned in the 40z doesnt mean it wont reach down and jiggle your balls at sub 30 hz frequencies.
