Wicks
Fuck winter is not going down without a fight. Hope the recones go smooth. It is putting up one hell of a fight, that's for sure...... Thanks, I'll post up some pics here in a little bit. Hopefully the CA glue fully cures in this crappy cold weather. I think everything went smooth. One recone is done (minus dustcas) and was playing free-air yesterday. The second one is still clamped. Giving it extra time due to the cold weather. The first one seems to have went well. Played OK with no rubbing and moved freely. The coil is off just slightly as one side is closer to the pole piece then the other side. Not sure if that's normal and fine. I guess we'll see later when its loaded and under some pressure. I used overlapping spacers, but in hindsight, I'd go back and double up on the spacers to really make sure the coil was centered. Wicks
Here we go. Time to dive into some reconing. LOTS of pics. This is my first attempt at speaker repair so let me know if I'm doing something totally wrong. First off, cleaning out the gap with the backwards tape stick. I also used LOTS of compressed air to blow out the motor many times throughout the process. Cut up some manilla folders into three pieces. Inserted into the gap so that all pieces overlap evenly. Test fit of the recone assembly. Fits well. Reusing my old direct-leads since they are the correct length and already have the lugs on them. No need in re-doing that part, although this took some extra prep-time to get everything in the right order. Spider landing sanded with 60grit. I also took a razor blade and dug a small groove into the center of the landing. I figured a rougher surface would give the glue a better bond. Lining up the tinsels. Crimping the direct leads to the tinsels. I asked Cody about soldering and he suggested this. This is also how my stock DC tinsels were. That worked great so why change it? I also didn't want to risk damaging the tinsels due to a bad solder joint. Heatshrink over the crimp joint. Applying a healthy bead of CA glue around the spider landing and a little on the spider itself. Lining it up. The most nerve racking part of the whole process. I stood here hoping I didn't screw anything up since the CA glue bonds very quickly with the activator. AND... Wicks
Quickly sprayed the activator and dropped the spider on the landing. Looked like a good fit so on came the weights and clamps. Same process on the second one. Took the remaining CA glue and applied more of it around the glue joint, for extra strength. And more weights/toys I had sitting around This post sent with 100% recycled electrons. 2004 BMW M3Mechman 280A 2 - XS Power XP30001 - XS Power D375 500F of Maxwell SuperCaps (soon to be 1000F) iPadMini2Dash mounted O-scopeAudison bitOne (Remote DRC MP) Highs Amp - PPI Art A404 Hertz HSK130 (HSK165 waiting...) Wicks
Time for the surrounds. Applied a generous layer of the rubber CA glue that came with the recone kit. I noticed that this glue didn't set up with the activator so it needed to sit overnight to cure. Quickly found out that I didn't have enough clamps so I had to run back to Lowe's! ...and we have clamps: Here's where I noticed that the coil on the first recone was very slightly off centered and closer to the pole piece on one side then the other. I wanted to play the sub to see if it would rub. My trunk was completely torn apart so I looked around and saw my lil PPI Art A300 sitting there so I ran some 8ga extension wire to my trunk fuse panel. Ran my iPhone into the amp and here we go....ITS ALIVE. Seems to move OK with no rubbing although this A300 only puts out about 300W so the real test will come shortly when they're ready to install. With that checked out, onto the second surround. I have another competition coming up on the 18th so I guess my rebuilding skills will be put to the test........real soon! Wicks
WOW, SIMPLY WOW! I want those surrounds now! DAMN YOU! Well then.........get yourself some AR recones and get your hands dirty... They do look mean...although out of curiosity, I measured the actual cone diameter. They only measure at about 8" So I hope those surrounds allow some extra throw. This will be interesting on how it affects my meter score...given they'll be a little stiff initially but we'll see.
