Filling in kerfs

Recommended Posts

I know most everybody just fills in the kerfs with fiberglass resin, but I was wondering, is it possible to use wood glue with mdf dust mixed in? Or just use wood glue by itself for that matter?

Let's hear your thoughts!

Yes it can be used and i have done it. Ended up cutting it all out and filling them with resin afterwards because i couldn't get it to squish into the kerf slots worth a shit. Resin is used a majority of the time because of it being so easy to work with to do that job. Especially if you drill the air vent holes in the kerf slots..

wood glue is pointless for filling in holes. Wood glue cures by letting the water evaporate over a day or so. It wont fill it alll on the first you would waste a ton of product.

Resin all the way. When you kerf cut you make that MDF paper thin so you need the resin and mat to build the strength back up. Straight wood glue isn't going to cut it.

  • 4 months later...

I fill kerfs with PL premium construction adhesive if I am not fiberglassing anything else at the time. If I already have glass out, I glass it because it is easier. Either way, it is structurally sound imo.
