Or is that just how thew build houses do it? (Each company gets a different color) heck Id pay extra if I could choose the color of the board. Wicks Posted June 28, 2012 Report Share Posted June 28, 2012 Its possible. Most consumer electronics use either red or green boards but I've seen blue, yellow and of course brown boards. The CM (contract manufacturer / build house / board house) would have to order colored circuit boards from the company that makes them. As Cody mentioned above, they're mass produced so the more changes you have, the higher the cost. If the circuit boards are rated at a higher temperature then most consumer electronics then that also may affect the color options... 8ight Posted June 28, 2012 Report Share Posted June 28, 2012 (edited) The color of the PCB has no impact on it's performance since pigmentation can be added during the manufacturing process rather easily. Many motherboard manufacturers do this to create a brand identity or accent high-end equipment. Due to the massive volume PCBs are ordered in to keep costs down it would not be effective to offer color choices. It would be far simpler to switch the color for every board, but likely not since that may entail moving to another supplier and losing a juicy volume discount built up over time. EDIT: Temperature tolerance is determined by the thickness of the board overall and how much copper is inside of it. That is why many motherboard manufacturers use terms like "XX layer PCB", "XXoz copper PCB", or what have you.
