Metals to use for a Bus Bar???

Recommended Posts

Im making a bus bar for my batteries and im using a aluminum bar and the bolts i bought are Zinc plated. Ive heard people say to use stainless steel but when i looked up the conductivity ratings for Zinc and Stainless steel, Zinc is over 20% higher on the scale for conductivity? what is better to use and does it matter for signal too because i used Zinc plated bolts for my speaker terminals.

Zink should do fine. A lot of people use stainless, but brass is what I noticed Stinger uses on there terminals and circuit breakers.

But yeah what you have should do just fine.

Aluminum or copper.

X2, these are going to be the most affordable choices. Silver would actually be the best metal to use, but it corrodes and is expensive.

Stainless and brass are least corrosive.. but also more resistent... I use aluminum flat stock 3/8x2in and 5/16x1/12 zinc bolts and haven't had any issues

Your bus bars should fit firmly against the lead terminal of the battery and the majority of your current will flow from that junction. The bolt is just to hold them firmly together. But going brass or zinc coated is just fine
