Kyblack76
I have had zero issues,.. but, i was curious whats TOO HOT when it comes to HO alts???? It has to be close to a hun right now,..... i road maybe 11 miles, from pub to home. Jumped out, grabbed my gun, and shot the laser right into the windings. Ambient air like i said is damn near triple, and the rest of the engine bay seemed to be about that temp..... but, the last few days, i guess i have been tripping out. Any opinions???.... and as always, thanks and appreciate any and all info KB Quote SMD SUPER SELLER The Burban Build Blazer Build sold Acura trunk build sold

Kyblack76
good question......because i know all my alts get HOT HOT..i always wonder, what the actual breaking point is. I can't believe anything survives under that hood with all that heat. See, that is my issue... I made the damn mistake of starting to probe the unit (some pun) on a regular basis. And now,... with the ocd kicking in, im really starting to sweat the issue..... Can anyone, anyone shed light? Again, thanks for any help, and any suggestions......... SnowDrifter
I wouldn't worry about it. IIRC some companies rate hot output at ~200 degrees. My stock alternator ran above boiling all the time. I could lick my finger and touch it and there would be a sizzling noise. And it went for 100k without issue Edited August 1, 2012 by SnowDrifter Quote ~~~~~~~~SAY NO TO PHOTOBUCKET~~~~~~~~ Snow's DD-1 tracks here: https://www.stevemeadedesigns.com/board/topic/167433-snows-dd-1-tracks/ My take on OFC vs CCA: https://www.stevemeadedesigns.com/board/topic/110381-things-that-piss-you-off-in-the-car-audio-world/?do=findComment&comment=2461444
Sheena
mechman has a video of their alt hitting 170 and his voice didnt sound stressed in the vid at all.. dc power rates their hot rating at 200F.. so i imagine that about 250+ is damaging. 300 is probably critical.. just guestimations. as everyone knows heat isnt good for electronics, but as long as some of these alts have lasted people in the hot hot hot weather, i'd say its fine. just look at all the people running their stock alts wide open for 2-3 years. H/O alt will easily last much longer just based on that. (im not running much, and i prefer overkill on the elect) I have just touched it, and thought... "man, that is freakin hot, and i hate it" Also, am i taking life away from the unit?????.... is there anything i can do the help?.... SnowDrifter
Also, am i taking life away from the unit?????.... is there anything i can do the help?.... I don't think it's hurting it. They are designed to run at that temperature If you really want to help cool it, go to home depot and get some dryer hose. Remove a fog light and pipe the hose up and make it blow on the side/back of the alternator. Add a fan if you want cooling at a stop too since this method only works when driving Quote ~~~~~~~~SAY NO TO PHOTOBUCKET~~~~~~~~ Snow's DD-1 tracks here: https://www.stevemeadedesigns.com/board/topic/167433-snows-dd-1-tracks/ My take on OFC vs CCA: https://www.stevemeadedesigns.com/board/topic/110381-things-that-piss-you-off-in-the-car-audio-world/?do=findComment&comment=2461444
