What is so special about the box?

Why is the box so important? What is the difference between one $50 box and one from "Dave the Box Guy"? What does the "Hz" tuned from the box do? Can someone please explain to me the pros and cons of purchasing a $50 box from Sonicelectronix and one from Dave? Thank you!

IMHO build your own.

So called 'prefab' boxes are usually too small(choke the sub), tuned too high, and have too little port area, meaning that they are inefficient and don't have much low end extension - You can play higher notes, but have near no output on lower notes.

you need to look at different brands of subs...well differently. each sub is going to require different air space volumes to help control the sub....you by a prefab box yes it may work but is optimized for your sub or vehicle...the tuning of the box comes down to the type of music you listen to it helps to get the most output in the frequency you like...hopefully that makes sense

What exactly does the tuning do? What does having it tuned lower do?

Generally speaking, tuning lower will let you play a wider range of frequencies, but you will be quieter. Higher tuning will let you play a narrower range of frequencies, but will be louder. You will be able to play down to tuning, and a bit below before losing output. Ex: I am tuned to 35, and can play down to 30 before tapering off very much

Again, this is a very general rule.

Tuning is in theory the lowest frequency you can play before you start sloping down when you play lower frequencies, like if you box is tuned to 32hz, you can play 32 to the 50's flat in theory. You can still play the 20's but it won't be as loud as the frequencies within your tuning frequency. Lower the tuning usually, better your box is for music because you have better range of frequencies, though of course, if you tune too low, you lose output in the higher bass frequencies. For a good daily box that allows you to maintain sound quality while maintaining output, you usually tune to low to mid 30's in general.

The tuning point is where your box loses its ability to dampen (or control) the excursion (movement) of your subwoofer's suspension. Output usually decreases dramatically below tuning, depending on the design of the box.

A ported box has the ability (the ABILITY...remember that) to be much louder across a select range of frequencies than a sealed one. Ported boxes can also have nasty peaks and sound like boo boo. It's ALL in the design. Size, Tuning frequency, Port area, and Port/Driver orientation all make a difference.

That's what I said when I mean't sloping down on the db's of the frequencies when you play below tuning if you were to look from a chart. I don't know what happens to the sub mechanically when it plays below tuning but I know the results of what happens when it does sound wise.
