It is statements like this that just cause more confusion on what "impedance rise" actually is and what it means to people building everyday music systems. . . Jessica Posted August 28, 2012 Report Share Posted August 28, 2012 Rise isn't always bad, I may be wrong but in ported enclosures you will likely see lots of rise at tuning. But your subs will move less and the box does most the work. It ends up being more efficent since you are making less power but getting the most output. Don't worry about it. The impedance does not just "rise" because you put the woofer in a box. At Fs, the woofer has what is probably the largest impedance spike in the system and it occurs even if the woofer is sitting on your kitchen table. . .it does not mean you lose output at that frequency or need to have a lower impedance driver. Current system: 1997 Blazer - (4) Customer Fi NEO subs with (8) American Bass Elite 2800.1s Previous systems: 2000 Suburban - (4) BTL 15's and (4) IA 40.1's = 157.7 dB at 37 Hz. 1992 Astro Van - (6) BTL 15's and (6) IA 40.1's = 159.7 dB at 43 Hz. bkolfo4 Posted August 28, 2012 Report Share Posted August 28, 2012 I should clarify my last statement - A subwoofer will have additional impedance spikes once it is in the enclosure caused by additional resonant frequencies of the system. There are actually spikes on each side of the port tuning frequency, not at the tuning frequency. The driver being at minimum excursion is a reaction with the Helmhotz resonator, not an impedance spike. And the size and distance between these spikes has to do with several factors such as the tuning frequency vs. the drivers Fs vs. the natural resonance of the enclosure. That is why different enclosures will produce different impedances for a given subwoofer. The point I was trying to make was that there is still a major impedance spike with the driver not even in the box, and a sub does not just go from being a dual one ohm sub to a dual 4 ohm sub after being installed in a box. But what do you think would be better for that space? 2 12s or 1 15. Or just does it depend on quality of the subs. I know the 12's will generally have like 50in2 more than the 1 15 but don't 15's have better excursion? Don't worry about it, don't try and adjust your voice coil resistance to compensate for it, don't try and tune for it. Just go about your day wiring a 2ohm load to your 2ohm stable amp, and build your box according to recommendations. If you are a hardcore SPL competitor, and you may have some understanding of electronics, then by all means have at it.
