MrSkippyJ Posted September 27, 2012 Report Posted September 27, 2012 Basically, from what I can gather, is that the cars computer controls the alternators output. I think anyway. I think anyway. i just looked it up in a little less specific of a way, think it actually keeps a check on and regulates almost everything in the engine. Still don't see how it could change the alternator output though or what it does for or to the alt at all. Lbox88 Posted September 27, 2012 Report Posted September 27, 2012 It controls your charge voltage I believe. It monitors the battery level an adjust accordingly, so if it thinks the battery is fully charged, it drops the output of the alternator from say 14.7V down to 12.5ish so that the battery doesn't overcharge. One way to overcome this with some vehicles is to either turn on the parking lamps, or in my case I have to turn the headlights on. My Equinox likes to charge at 14.6 volts hot, and once it feels the batts are full it slowly drops to 12.5 unless I turn the headlights on. If I do that it brings the charge voltage back up to 13.9-14V until the battery appears drained enough that the alternator is brought full on and charges at 14.6 again. Pain in the ass. Also, I see Ray is lurking, wonder if he has any input UBL | Build Log

Aaron Todessa Posted September 27, 2012 Report Posted September 27, 2012 its just typical over engineering and a pain in the ass. if you equinox drops to 12.5 at anytime while driving you have a charging circuit issue, or alternator going bad or bad signal to or from the pcm/ipc dynamic, or bad pcm. plain and simple.
