What will it take?

In my 1995 integra. the original ALT is a 90 amp. Currently there are two stock 90amp alts on this car. I have six runs of KNU 1/0 comming from the alts to the batteries in the rear. 3 (+) and 3 (-) Currently i have one Northstar NSB170 battery, and two stinger spp1200 batteries in the rear. the amps im using are two powerbass XTA4000s. wired to 1ohm each. that being said, with a 4channel amp running my mids, and all the other misc things in the car, gauages, blower motor, etc. How much ALT and Batt do I need to keep this set up above 13v at full tilt? I'm looking at replacing my second alt with a larger one. Wondering how large i should be shooting for?

Thanks in advance. Feel free to ask questions if i left any info out

I'm guessing by no replys, that i'll be doing some trial and error to find the magic number here. So far at 2000 rpms it will stay above 13v for the first few minutes. After a few minutes it slowly starts to drop. Leading me to believe i need more battery. If anyone has any advice, feel free to chime in. Thanks!

go with a 270a alt

or 2 270s. thats a lot of potential current draw you have there.

CURRENT SYSTEM:

  • Alternator:
    1. Stock alt on mids/highs
    2. Isolated DC Power 270 SP - Charging @ 16.8v
  • Batteries: (2) XS D1400s
  • Power Cable: Double Runs of 1/0 KNU Kolossus Fleks
  • Headunit: 80-PRS
  • Sub Amp: DC 5.0k
  • Subwoofers: 2 RE MT 15s /PSI dual .7ohm recones
  • Subwoofer Enclosure: 9.1cubes @ 32hz - brutal.
  • Mids & Highs Amp: CT125.4
  • Active Components:
    • Mids RE XXX 6.5c
    • Highs - 3 RE XXX tweeters per side(A pillar)
  • Noise Control: Damplifier Pro all over the cab.

thanks for the replies guys. I have room to run my stock alt (since no one makes a large amp replacement for my stock alt) and two bigger alts. I could easily run two 270s or one larger one like a 350-400 Singer. As far as batteries go, I am having some serious issues there. I have VERY little room. I'm replacing the two stingers with three HC1800 Kinetics. I hope that helps some. There is a lot of things in a small space on this car. When i go to install the new batteries and build the new enclosure ill be making a build log.

with 8000w to the subs, an estimated 500w to mids/highs, thats 8500w of output which will need 11,333w of input at 75% efficiency. Add on 1000w of draw for the engine and car accessories and you need to supply 12,333w from your electrical.

Now, you cannot supply all your power from the alt, so dont listen to anyone that says you need 1000A of alternators. This is why we use batteries.

Time is a function much forgotten, and batteries store the power produced from the alternator over time and supply it on demand.

So we figure what batteries will supply 12,333w.

Stinger rates those batts at 2400w ea. So you have 4800w there.

Those wattage ratings are usually based on 15min which puts the NSB170 at 3600w

Putting you at 8400w total.

So far you are a little shy. I suggest adding or swapping batts or you will continue to drop voltage no matter what alternators.

Now to charge those you can figure time to charge by the aH.

each Stinger ah looks to be 44 for 88ah

NSB is about 165

Total ah is 253ah.

This means that you need 253A of alternator to charge them from dead to full in 1 hour.

Based on playing dynamic music, and not playing 100% for over 20 minutes, you can keep those batts properly charged from a 250A alt but only if you stay within the batteries power range. Once you exceed that, you will never be able to properly charge them.
