Mikey Bates
So right now i currently have an 18" sub with 23.5xmax....i was looking at getting cheap subs that would be 8 12s with xamx of 6.5mm Sooo All things equaly. even though there is wayy more cone area ( like 904 ish to 254 ish ) i want to know if they would be moving the same amount of air or way more.. reson being i took my 18 at 254 cubein times the xmax. 23.5 and got like 5900 the 12s however is 900 cube in time 6.5 xmax and got like 5800 So to my question... All things equal. Would going to 8 12s really be any louder? give they technically move the same amount of air..... Same power and everything else BTW and lets ignore boxes and such.... im talking math on paper
Captain Stupid
My guess is that they would be way louder than 1 18 at low volumes, but nearly equal at the higher volumes. At lower volume, the 18 is not going to move to it's full Xmax potential. For example, say you are pushing the 18 with only 200 watts of power. With 23.5mm of Xmax, I'm guessing your 18 is around 1000 watts RMS and the 12 arent even close to that, maybe 100-200 RMS? So at 200 watts per 12, they are likely seeing close to maximum excursion, assuming your enclosure is built properly. At 200 watts on the 18, it too may only be moving around 6-7mm, thus making it quieter because the overall volume of total air that is being moved is less. But assuming you are talking apples and apples here, the 18 maxed out and the 12s maxed out, they will likely be close. I'd give it to the 12s though, because it is probably easier to bring them to their physical performance limits than it is to bring the 18 to it's limits. Now, if you want to talk about the advantage of one big sub over many little subs in the amplifier wattage and cubic feet of box space category, the 18 is the clear winner. In other words, try running those 10 12s off the same wattage as the 18 and in the same size enclosure as the 18 and the 18 will certainly be louder as long as the enclosure is built correctly. An 18 on 1000 watts in a 6 cubic foot box will sound nice. That same power and space? 100 watts on each of 10 12s in a 6 cubic foot box would not be very impressive. 2006 Cadillac Escalade 2/3 drop on 28" wheels Two RE SX 18" subs RF T2500-1bdCP amp, 3531watts on birthsheet Custom carbon fiber sub box EVERYTHING else is stock, for now 149.4 @ 37hz, Termlab, dash, open window on two AQ3 18s all stock electrical, wired to .25 ohm on a RF T2500 148.8 @ 36hz, Termlab, dash, open window on one AQ3 18 all stock electrical, wired to .5 ohm on a RF T2500 147.8 @ 38hz, Termlab, legal, sealed on two RE SX 18s 146.4 @ 36hz, Termlab, legal, sealed on one RE SX 18 Link to my hack-built, stupid, carbon fiber wasting project.... http://www.stevemeadedesigns.com/board/topic/149946-carbon-fiber-box-update-1494db-37hz-on-tl/ http://gifsoup.com/NDM3MTc1MQ

bkolfo4
So all we know about these subs is Xmax and people are giving you an answer. And I love your calculations to come up with 5800 and 5900. . . This is going to be a fun thread. Can't wait!
