Possible Spark Knock? How to Fix

Recommended Posts

Ok, so before I begin I want it to be known that I know little about engine/performance, so bear with me.

For a while now, my engine has made this noticeable crackling sound when I accelerate anywhere, and gets louder as I accelerate uphill. For a while I didn't really think much of it, but just recently when I was driving uphill and smoke came out of the tailpipe while I hear the crackling I began to worry.

This crackling sounds almost like little BB gun pellets bouncing around in my engine. It gets worse on hot days, especially on inclines.

I've tried to find out what this sound is exactly, and so far I've found this video about spark knock. The sound is just about dead on to what my car is sounding like.

Does anyone here have any experience with fixing spark knock? And does anyone think this is what I could have? If I could find my camera I'd a take a video to catch the sound.

Mechanic said the smoke may have been possible blow-by. He checked all my fluid levels and for any oil/water mixture. Everything was fine, so the head gasket seems to be fine.

From what I've read online, I may need a new EGR Valve. Also a knock sensor could need replacement, but I'm not too sure my engine has one. Also it's recommended that I use higher octane gas, but I can't see why my tiny 1.6 non performance engine would need high octane fuel. Also said there could be carbon buildup on the pistons, but I'm not sure how to fix that.

Thoughts? Sorry for the TLDR post.

Spark knock occurs when the combustion chamber gets hot enough to the point where the fuel in the chamber ignites before the spark ignites it.

Higher octane fuel helps.

Carbon build-up will also attribute, do you know what CR of your engine is?

Car is 1992 Corolla, 4AFE engine. I think I'm going to try and clean my EGR valve today. CR is 9.5:1. Thanks for the reply. From what I;ve read this can be very harmful to the engine over time.

Sadly, if you run the higher grades of gas, it reduces the risk of engine knock occurring.

On that car, not worth fixing. New motor or new car time.

This is gonna be the best bet. Being that old, it's gonna be a matter of time before the entire engine takes a dump. Either find a donor car to pull a better motor from, or look for a new car.
