Slapz Posted November 10, 2012 Report Posted November 10, 2012 OK so i was going to put 2 12" dc lvl 4's in my 2009 bmw and have been told that when you fit a new battery to these cars they have to be registered at the dealer with the new battery specs other wise i can over charge it? WTF This is what im hearing from various bmw forums The DME controls charging voltage on nearly all modern cars. As the battery ages, the alternator output voltage is increased by the DME to help charge an old battery. If you do not register the new battery in the DME, it can overcharge a new battery and kill it within weeks or months. Seriously wtf is this? im planning on adding 3 xs power d3000s along side stock battery i don't want to cook them has anybody got any info or experience on new bmw charging systems?

If the alt is still set to charge at X over normal charging levels to give a old battery a better charigng voltage. Plug up a brand new one it can easily over power it. Slapz Posted November 10, 2012 Author Report Posted November 10, 2012 Yeah it make sense to an extent and there seems to be lots of people from various forums saying the same thing, but at the same time loads of people say this have installed cheap wall mart batteries and not registered and have been fine. Obviously i want to make sure im good before i do anything in a new car like this. surely somebody has done an install in a new bmw? if this shit is true then wtf you cant install in new bmws that sux
Slapz Posted November 10, 2012 Author Report Posted November 10, 2012 I still can't find any solid info on this Lots of people are saying they have fitted non oem batteries and had no problems. and other people are banging on about how you will over charge your battery etc. This got me thinking surely as a battery ages its ability to be overcharged is not reduced how is that even possible? If what these people are spouting is true they are basically saying that its ok to give an old battery more voltage or more charging current. but its not ok for a new one? that makes no sense.

Bump4life Posted November 10, 2012 Report Posted November 10, 2012 just check the voltage? get a DMM and see whats going on so you dont have to guess. Having a mercedes benz myself I have tried calling the dealers around me and they dont just hand out that information. So I went in with my DMM and checked it all myself. Then you can see what your charging at to see if you are over charging. I would highly doubt your stock Voltage regulator or computer charges over 15 volts. as long as you are sub 15 and over 13.8 cold, you should be fine. Slapz Posted November 10, 2012 Author Report Posted November 10, 2012 stock battery is indeed AGM Bmw won't give out any other information other than you must buy a OEM battery from them for 5 million dollars and remortgage your house to get it coded aswell. Apparently it is supposed to give more charge to older batteries or something but my guess is that it simply reduces charge to new ones for efficiency, i can't see how it would decide to put 15+v into the battery just because its getting old. no 12v battery will like much more than 15v new or old makes no difference. Im finding out more people are saying they have fitted non oem ones and not had a problem etc, ill stick a voltmeter on it and see what its reading. i think people are bullshiting on bmw forums about over charging or beliving the BS the dealer tells them so they spend 5 mill on a oem batt from the dealer. wouldn't make sense for the charging system to do that to a 12v battery ever. thanks for the replies anyhow!
