hey guys, i just had one of the most retarded car audio conversations that i've had in a while. (at least im pretty sure, i could be wrong)

i just went into the "Car Audio Professionals" here in Rexburg to see if they had any 1/0 Ga ring terminals so i could get to work doing my big 3.

anyways i decided to chat with one of the guys for a bit just cause i don't get to talk to people who like car audio often.

well he started saying stuff that just made me go...huh?

*like the fact that he said that 1/0 Ga wire isn't needed anymore and the only reason they have the 1/0 ga kit in store is for people who want to install it themselves.

*also that all amps now days don't have 1/0 Ga terminals. they only have 4 Ga or 8 Ga terminals. cause 1/0 Ga isn't needed.

*also that bandpass boxes are out of style and no one does them anymore.

*also that his little JL 1000 W amp has enough power to power all 24 12" JL subs (they had a wall in the store with them in it in ported boxes) (also he said each sub was 300rms each)

and then what he said next made me really go, oooooooookkay?

he told me that Watts mean nothing at all now a day, and that all it is, is how much the companies want to exaggerate their products, and that if any company says their amp puts out anything more then about a 1000 Watts or so then they're lying and it really doesn't put out that much. he also directed this towards all subs too.

now let me say i can understand that if your talking about peak power and of some crappy brand amps. but im pretty sure a crescendo bc2000-d puts out what it says in it's birth sheet. i also understand that most subs you can push them a little past their rated rms in certain conditions and that some good companies under rate their subs a lot, but im pretty dang sure that the fact "Watts mean absolutely nothing" is very untrue.

now he said all this like he believed it in his heart so i just stood back and pretended i knew nothing. cause im always open to learning the truth and changing what i think. so i wanted to ask you guys:

is anything he said true? if so explain to me more and why and i'll gladly except it.

but right now i don't think im ever going back there for anything.

i just had one with two places on the phone called for 8 guage power wire and the guy said we only have kits i said huh you dont never run 8 guage wire to the subwoofers he goes why would you do that

In that world and for most of his customers I'm sure it is true. For some of those guys car audio is work, not a hobby. They cater to people who just want a little bump in their trunk and don't know anything about car audio. Also remember that most of the people in the shops are more salesmen than bassheads.

Everything he said was trying to persuade you not use your 1/0 and buy some of his overpriced (insert brand here) wire for 8 dollars a foot, and to possibly get you to buy an amplifier from him for like five grand.

The 1000/1 is one of the best 1000 watt amplifiers on the market. But far from the best amplifier on the market...

yeah there wasn't anything over 1000 watts in the store. and they sold JL, Memphis, and Rockford.

yeah true and i guess this is kind of the feeling i got from him. but still, it just makes me not wanna buy from them that much. he kind of sounded like he had the attitude of, you know nothing here is all you need to know: (spit out stuff that seems like its geared towards satisfying a stay at home soccer mom or something)

i guess part of my problem is that when i go into an audio shop it's cause i expect them to love the audio scene like i do and they want to get others into it too.
