Abbreviations for Ohms Ω what are they?

Recommended Posts

no worries I didnt know R ohms either, I'm using the IM-SG1 right now and it says Ωc when I test a wire's impedance with different runs and I want to know what it means.

C can mean a couple things. But you cant test impedance of a wire. At least not outside of a circuit.

You probably will get an answer posting that question to D'Amore about the tool specifically.

How do you guys type the Ohm symbol?

Try holding alt and pressing 8486 on the num pad. It doesn't work for me because I don't have a number pad on my laptop.

And the fact more than one person agrees does not make it a circle jerk, it makes it a bukkake scene and you're in the middle ;)

Actually you can. All resistance is is the opposition to the flow of electricity. You can test the impedence of any electrical component if you have a dmm that will read very high or very low impedence. For example, I just took a 3" long piece of single strand copper wire and tested it with a fluke 45 meter and it read resistance just fine.

How do you guys type the Ohm symbol?

X2 been wondering that. Google didnt help

Hold "Alt" and type the ASCII code using the number pad

OHM symbol = <Hold> ALT + <Numpad> 234 = Ω

Resistance an Impedance are different things.

From Wiki pedia

Electrical impedance is the measure of the opposition that a circuit presents to the passage of a current when a voltage is applied.

The electrical resistance of an electrical element is the opposition to the passage of an electric current through that element

So can this tool measure DC resistance that you'd see in a wire? I don't know, never saw this tool.

Can it only measure reactive impedance as in a woofer?

Do you mean like mili ohms mΩ= 10-3, micro ohms µΩ= 10-6, nano ohms nΩ= 10-9 , pico ohms pΩ= 10-12

Then you have the positive side of the spectrum like kili ohms kΩ= 103 , mega ohms MΩ= 106 , giga ohms GΩ= 109 , tera ohms TΩ= 1012

Is this what you were talking about?

yeah thank you, but specifically Ωc because thats what the IM-SG1 says, I think it means closed loop?

it can measure impedance at any frequency, when you drop the frequency to 7.3 hz it's pretty much the same as hooking up a normal dmm.

To measure the wires impedance I hook up the sgim1 to both the pos and neg wires then I connect the other end of the wire to the pos/neg so it is a closed loop.

This gives a reading and you can see it over the whole hz spectrum and if the ohms change.
