ds1919 Posted December 20, 2012 Report Posted December 20, 2012 do you mean like when 12v is applied to the switch part of the relay, could it stay closed for a long time until that 12v is disconnected? Lets back track- a relay consists of two parts, the switching part that closes the circuit for the load circuit, and the load circuit. For a Normally Open relay, when 12v is applied to the switching part, the loop for the load cicuit is closed. Visa-versa for a Normally Closed relay. A SPDT relay can work the same, it just closes or opens two circuits. Some cars (my 78 vw scirocco) has a relay that is Normally Open. But when when the car is running, the relay stays Closed the whole time, due to the 12v going through it. The relays last a long time, there's not much in there, and heat is the only thing that really ruins relays. So you cant run more amperage than what the relay can handle. Take 20% of the handling capacity and thats what you should be running through it, no more. Stuck Open means there is nothing happening. No 12v going to it. Open means just that, open. Remember that electricity flows in somewhat of a loop; positive 12v source, into the load, out the other side as negative and back into the neg 12v. Its like a loop. So if you have a Open loop, that means there is a break in the loop. A closed loop is a completed circuit. A relay that is Stuck Open will last forever!

ds1919 Posted December 21, 2012 Report Posted December 21, 2012 KenC210 I think I know what you mean. If the switch part of the relay contacts are always touching. On paper it shouldnt change anything, as long as there isnt a significant amount of heat passing thru. Thats on paper. Realisically, the more a electrical circuit is passing electricity, it has a possibility to shorten its life span, the components that is, not the electricity lol. If you're thinking of making a circuit that needs 12v to keep the relay closed ALL the time (is in 24hrs), then I would just go with a normally closed relay, that way, you dont need 12v to close it. The 12v would open the loop and cut off power going to the load... hth
