Dust/nauseous fumes...How do you handle sanding/cutting/fiberglassing in your garage?

Recommended Posts

As I'm working on further turning my garage into my own little car audio space I still have one huge problem. Everytime I cut wood or sand I have to open both the garage doors all the way because of the huge amount of dust. And every time I fiberglass or do anything that creates fumes I have to do the same not only to let the fumes air out but also so they don't overtake the inside of my house. What type of ventilation setup, tips, or tricks can I do to somehow do all of this without completely opening the garage...Because when it's 15 degrees outside or in the summer 90 degrees it's not always the most comfortable to be in the garage with the doors wide open lol.

The 'glassing I can't help with. There's no convenient or inexpensive way to get those fumes out (that I know of). I usually have to open the door or do it outside to keep the fumes out of my house. The wood dust is an easy fix. I built a small box out of 1/2" MDF that houses a small turbine-style fan inside of the box blowing outward. On the intake side is a regular 12x12 house air filter. I hung the whole unit from my ceiling with the fan pointing down toward the floor. It seems to do the trick for the most part. If I do a lot of cutting out there I have to change the filter about once a month. I think the whole ordeal cost me around $60 to build and it's awesome at keeping MDF dust out of the air.

EDIT:

Oh yeah, those disposable cotton respirators make a world of difference for me.

Invest in a good respirator too.

That I do have

Interesting, that was my first idea was to do something with some 3 foot fans and exhaust the dust out

Yeah, I never really had any luck just moving the dust out. I would still have some settling on the floor of my garage, on the handles of my tool box and on the door going into my house. The filter-fan thing seems to work pretty well though.
