You will also need a bunch of paper towels and isopropyl alcohol (to clean the solder before you actually use it). And get a good quality flux, dont cheap out.. Also, be sure to clean the remaining flux off the joint with the alcohol (I also use a small paintbrush) after you are done. 2006 Silverado Ext. CW06Silvy Posted January 30, 2013 Report Share Posted January 30, 2013 No, actually if you clean the solder before you use it you will find that it generally is much dirtier than you think. The point of soldering is to join the wire to the connector and eliminate oxygen for corrrosion for a better joint. If you leave the dirt on the solder that is exactly what you are putting in the joint. Also, flux can act as a corrosive on the solder and if you dont clean it off it can cause problems down the road. I have found that by cleaning the solder it is slightly easier to work with. 2006 Silverado Ext.
