ncochran
I know that a lot of people seem to prefer birch to mdf based on strength/weight. I noticed at lowes that 3/4" oak plywood is only like $3 more per sheet than birch plywood. Is oak any good for enclosures, and are there any advantages/disadvantages to it? I am purchasing my wood this afternoon to get my build started (3 e8v3s and a hifonics brutus in the back of an 06 Scion xb). Tarball
The stuff you get at lowes/home depot is not what I would recommended for sub boxes. You want 13-15 layer veneer core hardwood. AI James
looking at what hes about to build. Lowes and Home Depot MDF is plenty for what hes doing. Nothing wrong with it whatsoever.

ncochran
Is the Lowes 3/4 birch or oak going to be suitable? Trying to stay away from mdf because it weighs a ton lol. 2006 Scion xB 2 Sundown SA12D2 Ported at 32hz 147 on non termlab (140-142 on TL) Currently in a walled 4th @ 50hz (not metered yet) Hifonics brz2100 Alpine Type-S Components Kicker 300.2 Big 3 / Skyhigh 1/0 cca Optima Blue Top 3 e8s ported at 32hz 135.1 sealed on dash @ 56hz 135.0 outlaw (I must have chosen song poorly lol) Build log 'Brandon15zzz', on 09 May 2012 - 3:13 PM, said: May have been clipping but none fucks were givin. Chris Hammer
Lowes or Home depot Playwood is stuff to stay away from. As far as Oak plywood or birch ply from reputable lumber yards...the difference is the veneer on the outer layers that is either oak or birch.. Different grain and different color..but in plywood..no real difference weight or strength wise. now if you did a solid Oak box...that would be one heavy sumbitch..but it would handle alot more abuse IMO then mdf or plywood of equal thickness. plus the acoustics would probably be better/or different. I've always wanted to do a relaly nice Hardwood enclosure..with Walnut stripes or some cool design that incudes some Purpleheart...but the cost is ridiculous compared to mdf. I guess you could always do a hardwood baffle...would look real nice in a luxury car if you stained it and coated it correctly with poly..IMO would be badass. Soory for the rant lol and offtopic.
