If larger equals peakier, does that mean when I am playing at low volumes it will always be peaky? Since you size the port for the higher volume condition, the port will always be "large" when the cone is barely moving, so it must mean it will be peaky. NOT Box size, tuning frequency, and driver t/s parameters determine frequency response. . . Could you post a link to this thread where this is discussed, I want to read up on it but searching for "box tuning" doesn't turn up anything other than this post. I would appreciate it of you would. I don't wanna jack this thread so even if you wanna pm it that'll be fine. Thanks alaskanzx5 I might just do thatI can recone a sub myself. About a year ago I took 2 12" power acoustic mofos and made one sub. I took the magnet and the motor off of one and j b welded it to the other motor and magnet. I had to wind my own voice coil so it would work. After I was done hooked up to 2 boss 5000w amps. And shattered my back and all my side windows came to this thread to recommend soundqubed and ct sounds. OP goes with soundstream. oh lawd.

bkolfo4 Posted April 1, 2013 Report Posted April 1, 2013 Was just looking for some info in the loudspeaker cookbook for another member when I noticed that Vance did a test on port non-linearity. As the port compresses, the f3 of the system rises. I found this interesting, as this says as the port gets smaller (to a certain point), the bandwidth will be REDUCED, not increased, and a higher f3 will cause a more "peaky" response 99% of the time. Opposite of what we keep seeing posted on these topics. The test shows a 12" driver with 6" port that is near linear, a 4" port that is very close to the 6" response, and then a 2". The measurements are taken at multiple power levels. The 2" port is the perfect example of why so many people are confused on this subject. With the 2" port, the port no longer acts like a port with input power above 5 watts. The system begins to act like a sealed box. The f3 rises from 40 to 45 Hz, but the rolloff changes from 19dB/oct to 14dB/oct. Big difference. As I have said many times before - when the port gets too small, then yes you will get increased bandwidth, and playing below tuning may work great, but keep in mind the port is no longer linear and you are losing a lot of the output associated with a ported system. Should have just built a sealed box at that point. bassfreake Posted April 1, 2013 Report Posted April 1, 2013 personally I would say that using an 8" port would be good since you're running 8" subs anyway and the surface area of a 6" port for that much cone area seems kinda small imo. Also making the box slightly bigger will also help to get tuned low rather than just making a crazy long port with it sticking out the end almost a foot n a half. just my 2c though I'm far from an expert I just play on Torres ALOT and usually with aero port lol as far as where to get them... you can get PVC at http://pvcflex.com/ decently cheap... though if you want an elbow for a bend those are kinda painful Thanks I was pretty excited about the alt myself. kind of like a school girl, in a dress, on a swing. lol It's warming up enough that the donut-punching cyclist douchenozzles are getting their two wheeled fagmobiles out. And is that before or after displacement of subs? from what I've been told port area is more dependant on what your cone area is than what your box size is. port per foot is just a typical guidline that I assume is because usually the box also usually roughly relates to the cone area in a way. is this an accurate interpretation to those of you that have been doing this for a while and port to cone area instead of box size? And bassfreake, if I could make a larger box I would, but fitting a box in between the bucket seats in my f150 and still keeping the armrests is proving to be a challenge. Lol I do think Im going to keep the 6" port and see how it goes. If it doesn't sound right or is hurting the subs then ill redo everything and see which works best. The only thing I need help with now is to figure out proper or best way to mount an aero port that will NOT be mounting with a flush flare end.
