My answer, The gain should be set properly and forgotten about. Once set, do not use it as an adjustable level control. Now, the other options depend on your own likes. An inline RCA bass level knob will act similar to the sub level on the head unit. So it is up to you to decide what is more convenient for you. If the amp comes with a remote bass knob, you can use that too. They are usually a built in crossover boost though and can add distortion if not accounted for in your initial gain adjust. When I said dd1 I meant after gain was set and you use the knob that comes with the amp doesn't it mess up the settings set with dd1 as I believed the knob was also a gain.
