Kicker L3 12s, box size/tuning please!

Hi, my friend wants to switch from sealed to ported and has 2 Kicker L3 12s on a Kicker ZX 1000 watt amp. For daily listening to mainly rap, rock...everything pretty much. Could someone help with a little more advice than the Kicker manual does. They appear to have 40hz tunings and higher. Is that what would work best for these L3s?

Any help would be appreciated. And he isn't going to switch to anything else, just advice on the box size, tuning, port size would be great. Thank you.

Also, if someone would like to come up with a box design for fun, the biggest dimensions for how we are putting the box in the trunk is 28" deep, 30" wide, and 14" tall (externally).

Here is a another suggestion, assumes this is a trunk car, AND you are sourcing around rated power:

Enclosure Specifications:

Fb = 34 Hz
Vb = 4.3 ft^3

External Height = 14 in
External Width = 30 in
External Depth = 27 in

Port Width = 4 3/8 in

Cut Sheet List:

* All Dimensions in Inches.
* Wood Thickness is 3/4 for all Parts.

External Enclosure Parts:

Front & Back = 30 x 14

Left & Right Sides = 25 1/2 x 12 1/2

Top & Bottom = 30 x 25 1/2

Shared Port Internal Assembly Parts:

2 x Front to Back = 20 1/4 x 12 1/2

Assembly guide (generic dimensions):

Important notes:

- CAREFUL: All trunk boxes built outside the car need to fit in their way in not just have the right dimensions.

- The port needs 4 3/8" of free airspace in front of it for proper operation.

- Setting your amp subsonic filter to 28Hz is suggested.

if you want something to get loud let me no ill draw something else up around 33-35hz

but the l3-l7 range seem to love 37-42hz for some reason

what fz does the l7 15s like

Tuning is mainly a question of taste and is related to the type of music you listen, most car subs systems setup for daily use are tuned in the 32-40 range. if you are setting your system up for burping then you tune to the frequency that will give you the most output but those setups will not work good with music.

ive never found a box with a high then 42hz tune that i have liked,

i quite often tune a lot of boxes to 40-42 as not to may people my way lesion to music that calls for >35hz to be played so a 40-42 hit 35-36 no problem and just gets loud doing it

Alright. Thanks everyone for the input. I don't think he'd be tuning under 30 too likely because he likes it loud too. The 34 hz drawing looks pretty good IMO, thanks Joe X for the drawing and dimensions. We'll most likely follow that.
