meade916
i can run the test.....but really, i can already bet there won't be any difference in the numbers. The crimp or the solder would have to be real bad for it to make that big of a difference in the test. I can hammer a terminal on the concrete and get just as good of a connection as anything else. The thing is, a few months later, it might fail. It might pull out. Longevity is the problem with a crap connection. Might work great today...but next week? The exposed strands that WERENT soldered might eventually corrode, causing a less then good connection EVENTUALLY. When i solder my wires, not only is it a proper solder, and BETTER then a crimp, the ends of the strands are also encapsulated. Encapsulated (sealed off) ends won't be able to corrode and will stay solid for life. IF YOU DO IT RIGHT. Also, in a pinch, if you need to use that terminal again, you can always heat it up and pull your wire back out, and use it again. Try that with a crimp. IMO, the best possible choice if you are a real stickler, is to solder AND crimp the big wires. I usually JUST solder though. **** FYI: I ONLY USE OPEN ENDED RING TERMINALS - im not speaking about the close ended ones....i hate those things. 1 Quote All SMD products + MORE available at my store here! https://wccaraudio.com/ Subscribe to My Youtube Channel! Yates
A combination of crimp and solder works best. that's what I do

01VWGREENMACHINE
I agree with Steve, besides I like the look of a terminal finished off with solder vs crimp. SnowDrifter
Hey Steve, do you think you could test the closed ended lug too? Even if you don't like them, a lot of folks including myself use them. So I think it would be worth testing with. I have a crimp tool I could loan for the test too Quote ~~~~~~~~SAY NO TO PHOTOBUCKET~~~~~~~~ Snow's DD-1 tracks here: https://www.stevemeadedesigns.com/board/topic/167433-snows-dd-1-tracks/ My take on OFC vs CCA: https://www.stevemeadedesigns.com/board/topic/110381-things-that-piss-you-off-in-the-car-audio-world/?do=findComment&comment=2461444
Amart88
I used to solder all the time but after I got my 12 hydro crimper that's all I use now.To each their own. If both are done correctly. it comes down to personal preference IMO. Steve does have a point about corrosion. I try to use tinned wire and adhesive lined Heat shrink. Seeing how most crimpers use closed copper lugs nothing can get in from the front anyhow. Quote My 2005 s10 blazer build. 4 zcon 18's walled. Kyblack76
agree.. im a crimper myself.. More on the bigger gauge. Smaller i will only solder. again, if done correctly, both work.. done wrong, both will fail... Just do either proper.... HowLowCanYouGo
I use a good ol hammer and a vice Works for me Edit: Except on smaller wires of course. I only ghetto crimp anything 6 gauge or bigger... Edited June 26, 2013 by HowLowCanYouGo Quote Nothing for now... Did you get that scar tissue when you got your vagina installed?
