The DC neo ran fine daily, the reason it never took off was the cost of neo nearly doubled. Cost on them was absolutely insane. The general consumer could buy 3 Level 6 18s for almost the same price as 1 neo 18. Not a hard decision in my book.

How much did it cost you for one motor structure???

for the cooling, think about it like a computer. if you take the cover off and open it up, it'll overheat. put the cover back on and air flows where it's supposed to and keep the computer cool. then with the smaller amount of space around the coil, the airspeed shoots up and provides even better cooling. when Fi did a neo motor they enclosed the coil.

Good point. But then you still have to remember that Neo can't get hotter than 80*C without losing magnetic strength so it wouldn't have that oven effect I'm think about, where as the ferrite magnets can get much hotter

I kinda figured it failed since it was never released, but there has to be reason for it just failing. Something was not right, was it due to the coil, was it due to cooling, was it due to money, etc.

I miss the old DD, dunno whats going on there now a days, but its just not the same as it once was.

I thought it was because they had trouble finding someone to make a very qualifying coil? And something about the key people working on it leaving or something?

But I can't remember for sure, could be totally wrong, but I could swear I read that somewhere.

The same logic applies to the diameter of a pole vent too Audiofanaticz. I guess there is a happy medium for pole vent size. Too big and it loses the effect of cooling. I guess many companies that offer a bigger pole vent, MAY not have done their homework. It can have the opposite effect if the pole vent is too big and actually HURT cooling custom what I've read.

OP, I'm hoping you have the former and shorting ring thing figured out. I'm really happy to see this build and I only want to see you succeed. You're a smart kid, keep it up brother

Yeah it's also important to remember that even if it was possible, (which it's not), drilling a pole vent of reasonable size can affect the magnetic strength in my case, might not be much but remember I'm in this for maximum power. And after a while of research I think I've nearly decided. I'll either use a basket-motor separation design and cut some holes in the former to help draw in the air as it passes that gap. Or I'll drill out holes in the bottom plateau of the basket to make vents there.

Pole vents mostly just change how the air pocket behind the dust cap react to movement, somewhat like a sealed vs ported enclosure. Yes there is some cooling effect, but its less than you'd think. Slits in the outer ring of the pole (somewhat like Kicker did with the Solo-X's) would be the way to increase air movement at the coil, though the surface area offered by the coil is so small you cant really get rid of excess heat beyond 100-200w maybe.

right... so it's more important to have good cooling with a neo motor so you don't exceed 80*c, right?

yes, lol I don't know why I can't word it correctly I guess. What I mean is, with that open motor, hot air has no reason to hang around, like it would in an enclosed ferrite structure. Because it has "fresh" air cycling through, the magnets in-turn wouldn't be as hot and since their coercivity wants to keep them as low as possible it would help to keep overall temps lower as long as my VC cooling is reasonable enough, not adding heat to the surrounding structure. So I shouldn't need that same pole vent like some of the ferrite ones that get in the high temps, the separated basket should work fine. This is also why I'm trying to get rid of the eddy currents because that's where a lot of unwanted heat comes from too.

And the reason this differs from the computer example is because of the cone. The back of the cone is constantly pushing and "pulling" air with it, so it would in fact be like a computer fan in a case once the subwoofer is in a box, forcing air through the motor structure.

80degrees celsius seems pretty low.

Yeah I've seen all that, but I do have all N grade magnets. Anything higher than that and you think Neo was expensive before?? Lol their high temperature ones are mind blowing, at least for the same size I need. Which is very hard to come by for some reason.
