davidmm Posted May 31, 2013 Report Posted May 31, 2013 I just completed the install of my system: Stock Alternator - 105A Stock Battery - Interstate MegaTron II Big 3 - No SoundQubed Q1-750 (500W @ 2 ohm) Old Avionixx 100W 2-channel amp After about two days of heavy use, I smelled a burning odor coming from the area near the alternator. I measured 13.9V during idle, and 12.3V on the battery when cold. The lights were not dimming during heavy music demands. So I stopped running the audio system, and there is still a burning odor coming from the alternator after driving around for about 10 minutes. I have been driving with no problems for about one week, but the buring odor is still present. Did I damage the alternator? Or something else? Thanks.

SnowDrifter Posted May 31, 2013 Report Posted May 31, 2013 I doubt that much power damaged your alt. Gotta be something else. Dead battery? I saw you didn't do the big 3. You sure it's the alt and not the stock wires burning? ~~~~~~~~SAY NO TO PHOTOBUCKET~~~~~~~~ Snow's DD-1 tracks here: https://www.stevemeadedesigns.com/board/topic/167433-snows-dd-1-tracks/ My take on OFC vs CCA: https://www.stevemeadedesigns.com/board/topic/110381-things-that-piss-you-off-in-the-car-audio-world/?do=findComment&comment=2461444

Tarball Posted June 1, 2013 Report Posted June 1, 2013 how did you set the gains. Yes you can damage your alt with a 750w amp. you could ge clipping and/or you stocker could have just enough to power the car. why no big 3? hdorre Posted June 1, 2013 Report Posted June 1, 2013 I wouldnt be surprised if it was the wire. My car came with (what seemed like) 10 or 8 awg I would definitely do the Big 3. I would also check all the alt wiring. davidmm Posted June 2, 2013 Author Report Posted June 2, 2013 I was not aware of the Big 3, so I did not do it. But I plan to. I noticed on my 2008 Subaru Outback, that the poitive lead of the alternator goes to the fuse box first, then to the battery. It appears as if some charging system is being used. Will connecting the alternator (through a fuse) to the battery, bypassing the fuse box, cause any problems? I plan to leave the factory wiring, just add the Big 3. Also, I do not believe the gains were not set too high, there is a remote gain knob that never flashed red
