Fibreglass resin still tacky?

pretty sure the acetone is not allowing the resin to cure.

Acetone eats ca glue up, makes many types of plastics, rubber, vinyls gooey, can strip paint.

So I could only imagine what it does to uncured resin.

After all the stuff is what fingernail polish remover is made mostly off.

Yea it is different. Maybe I wont use anymore of it. Still seems like a weak reaction even with plain resin. Last year the shit was turning my brush into a brick in 5 mins and the mixing can was hot to handle. I might take the bondo back tomorrow and get a gallon from napa.

If you want a longer pot life, mix less MEKP, it's a chemical reaction, you don't need TONS of it. The cure well happen, just slower with less catalyst

Have you ever thinned down resin with acetone before? Where did you get this idea from? I would never thin down resin, it's not meant to be. It's not like it's a paint base thst is urethane or anything like that. You've likely ruined your wood is my bet. You're going to need to start over and use the MEKP only in the resin, as is intended. Also, you mix your MEKP based on outside temp for it to setup properly. The hotter it is outside, the less catalyst you'll need, otherwise you won't have any pot life.

I think you well need to start over, I don't believe your acetone will allow the catalyst to activate properly especially since you said its not getting warm. You MAY have just slowed the curing process down, you may have prevented it from happening at all.

Good luck, I'd be pissed if it happened to me. Just breathe, take a step back, and likely you will be starting over. Let us know how it goes, I'm interested.

Well I only did the bottom side of one peice on the floor of my wall. It's semi hard but if I hold my thumb on it it will be tacky. The piece is PL premiumed to the truck so it aint coming out lol. I don't even see it. You got my ocd going now.

The board should still be ok though right? it was only a thin layer that won't be seen, sanded or glued on. I can;t scrape any off with my fingernail but it's like painters tape.

If it's tacking up, you might be ok. My guess is, you just slowed the cure process down by a lot. You effectively killed the purpose of the MEKP. It sounds like it isn't as tacky as I imagined, so you will probably be ok.

Ok, I feel stupid . Learn something new every day. If the test batch is rock hard tomorrow then I will really feel dumb lol

Well the batch i made last night was hard as a rock this morning so it must have been the acetone. go figure.

i would like to know who told you to mix acetone in it to get the "wood to soak it up better" lol....the wood needs no help.

polyester resin needs to be thick build heat and set up if you put it on too thin it will take forever to set if it does at all

Id guess it's never going to setup. It won't have any strength if it does. Back to the drawing board

Your brand of resin wasn't the problem, without the acetone, it would have been fine I'm sure. The Napa might be worth trying if it's cheaper though

Acetone is what is used to remove un cured resin, so yes the acetone is keeping the resin from curing it will take weeks to cure lol.

Yep lol. Lesson learned. Won't be using it ever again. Could have been a lot worse.
