I'm curious if anyone here is doing this at all. I know they've been around for a couple of years and the value has risen quite a bit. I've also read the tutorials on how to do so, but I was trying to see if there are some people out there that may be able to give me some tips. I have a few questions that some of you may be able to help me with:

What type of machines are you guys using?

How much does it cost to run per day?

How much do you make per day?

Do you run solo or in a pool?

If you are in a pool are they accepting new people and what are the payouts like?

I'm seriously considering getting into this because I don't think it's a fad like some suggest. I know the government does not like it at all but mining has quite a bit of potential to make money without huge startup costs. I am trying to convince my wife into letting me buy a rig, and I'm considering a small 5Ghs box to start out with. From some accounts online I've seen people making anywhere from .5-1.5 BTC per day using machines that operate at this level. As I don't know that much about the topic are these real amounts that are possible with this type of machine?

Any help or comments are greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Yes, I know that there are some services and goods out there that people associate with bitcoins. I have no desire and intention to do anything with them except trade them for actual currency. The thing is bitcoins are annonymous and it wouldn't be that easy to track down people that are mining them. Also there are several precautions that can be taken to hide one's location and ip address from anyone interested.

Looks sketchy

Yabut, government has always been that way. ;-)

But as Bitcoin goes, I mined some a few years ago but I didn't have anywhere near the processor speed I needed. Now that I do, I have neither the time nor the inclination to keep up with everything one needs to keep up with in order to be profitable in Bitcoin trading. Earlier this year, the Department of Homeland Insecurity confiscated the accounts of a Japanese trading firm but I'm not sure how much money they stole and from whom.

As far as mining is concerned, I would say go for it. It doesn't cost anything other than what you invest in a machine and the connection for it but, you need stupid fast processing because mining is essentially the solving of millions and millions of mathematical problems and, obviously, the faster your processor can calculate the more chance you have of "finding" Bitcoins.

More and more vendors are accepting btc nowdays, especially those in libertarian and anarchist circles, so if that's your bent, you'll have plenty of places to use them.

And of course, the fact that the mob, er, I mean government is now starting to harass and steal from companies that trade BTC, that means it has become a viable currency. After all, they don't care much about people who can't affect their counterfeit money but once a threat comes along, they bungee in and try to steal a much as they can. Fortunately, there isn't much they can do to individuals because the bitcoin is a peer to peer based electronic currency and there are enough servers on the planet that even the US state with all of its guns and henchmen can't confiscate all of them.

My advice would be to do a lot of due diligence before starting and just make sure you keep your btc wallet secure. The only real losses that individuals have suffered is through theft of unsecured wallets and, of course, exposing themselves to the greedy hands of government through trading with large online trading companies.

Good luck to ya!

Thank you for the detailed and thoughtful reply. I agree with the fact that there isn't a ton to lose and is worth the try. I'm just looking into the fine details so I know what to expect when getting in the mix of things.

Well, since I'm not currently mining or trading BTC I can't help there but, I do know of some forums where bitcoin miners frequent.

Freedomain Radio

Free Talk Live

Adam Vs The Man

Lew Rockwell's website. There are a lot of good articles on his website but he's a tad bit conspiratorial for my tastes.

Also, the Ludwig von Mises Institute has a lot of articles on Bitcoin as well as a forum where I'm sure there is current talk of bitcoin minutia.

I'd just do a search for bitcoin on any (or all) of those sites. Most of the people who frequent those sites are either anarchists or philosophical libertarians and Bitcoin is the perfect currency for us, since it flies in the face of statist control. And, there are some very intelligent individuals writing for and visiting these sites.

Bitcoin is not as anonymous as it used to be. Same thing with tor and the silk road. They recently just busted a kiddy porn guy on it. Remember all it takes is one nibble and you can unravel the whole thing. Too much exposure has made this kind of thing vulnerable
