Turning a sub box into home audio?

Recommended Posts

Ok, so once my Sound Cubed woofers get here, I am not longer going to need the 12 in my trunk. It is one of those pre-made, built in amp inside the box 12" Planet Bass thing-a-ma-jigs. So, if I don't throw it into my girlfriends Yukon, I may try to use it in my house. My question is, how do I wire it up? Can I splice the power wire into a regular indoor wire with the wall socket? Would it have to be fused somehow? And what about the remote, and RCA's? Do they just go to the back of my flat screen, or do I need some kind of receiver? Any links or wiring from car audio to house audio would be great.. Don't wanna burn the house down.

Did you get that scar tissue when you got your vagina installed?

The problem with running car amplifiers indoors, is that car amps are made to run off of 13-14 volts DC, whereas the wall sockets in your house put out 120 volts AC. So it would toast the amp if you just tried plugging it into the wall. One method people use to run car amps indoors is to make a bank of computer power supplies and mod them to put out 13-14 volts DC instead of the typical 12 volts.

You will need a 120VAC 60 hz to 12VDC converter.

Something like this, all though I am not sure how well these do under load for long periods of time.

Krakin, are you some sort of mad scientist?

I would have replied earlier, but I was measuring the output of my amp with a yardstick . . .

What you hear is not the air pressure variation in itself

That supply only puts out at most 40 amps continuous.

And what KMS said is best, just get an amp made for in house use.

Actually a cheap power supply is a 12V car Battery constantly hooked up to a battery charger. Just turn on the charger every time you have the amp on.

Also, yes you would need some sort of receiver. And the remote turn on can be turn on from a switch.

It's more than likely just not worth the effort especially if you don't really know what you are doing.

If you knew electronics for houses you can get a buck down transformer converter. Cheaper to purchase a crown pa amp!
