Straight razor..... Decisions.....

Recommended Posts

Considering switching to one in the interest of not having to keep purchasing new cartridges. Possibly cheaper in the long run

Anyone here use one? How does it compare? How easy/hard is it to cut yourself? What sort of upkeep do they need?

I've done some basic poking around on it. Seems I'd need the razor itself, leather belt/"strop", and a really fine sharpening stone. Trying to weigh the initial investment vs long term savings. And.... There is something "different" about using one. So there's that too :P

Anyways, just looking for input from those who have used

Here are a couple websites I use, I would suggest going with the safety razor and not a straight razor. You'll cut your face off with one......

http://www.westcoastshaving.com/

However, they all sell straight razors as well.

I would also recommend getting a mug and a couple soaps and a nice badger brush.

This would be a good starter kit, only you need is some blades. Start with a very basic gillette platnium, they are sharp but not super sharp. These razors take some getting used too. Not the shave, but how you hold it and such.

I use a cut throat razor, but it has disposable blades, to be honest, it's a great razor, I find it takes longer to grow back compared to a safety razor. To start off I was getting little cuts here an there, but once i got the hang of it, I barely get any cuts at all, only if I'm rushing! Lol

I got my razor from eBay, by a company called sanguine scissors

Crhis is like 9 so he really doesnt have to shave at all. He just wants to say he shaves with a straight razor for that one whisker he pulls with tweezers.
