SQ RANT.........

Recommended Posts

I'm not sure it it's due to my critical listening of my home setup, but I can pick up small details in daily life that everyone around me seems to just not hear. One small example is that I could be listening to music on my headphones (open backed) and hear someone knock on our door in the other room while my roommate without any auditory devices says he didn't hear anything.

It's not an upper frequency that you mentioned music junkee, but I am pretty sure it is related to constantly listening for small details in music.

Krakin's Home Dipole Project

Krakin, are you some sort of mad scientist?

I would have replied earlier, but I was measuring the output of my amp with a yardstick . . .

What you hear is not the air pressure variation in itself

but what has drawn your attention

in the two streams of superimposed air pressure variations at your eardrums

An acoustic event has dimensions of Time, Tone, Loudness and Space

Everyone learns to render the 3-dimensional localization of sound based on the individual shape of their ears,

thus no formula can achieve a definite effect for every listener.

Well, there are different types of hearing loss. Some people may hear just fine in normal conditions but if there is background noise it becomes indistinguishable to them. Some people have partial in a certain spectrum, some to a degree in the entire spectrum, etc... Some people are a little ADD such as myself and can get so distracted they dont 'notice' a knock at the door or someone is even talking to them. When you are listening to music from a critical listening perspective you may notice a knock at the door even though your room mate playing a video game or wacking off to porn in the next room has no clue. Your mind is already focused on any perceived audio while your room mate well......

I am still in the learning stages of tuning an audio system but I when i give an audition to someone that I am going to be doing an install for, I explain that "my system is GEARED TOWARD sound quality or fidelity". I only have a 2 way setup in the doors with a mediocre 3 way active crossover. Once again, my quest is for accurate fidelity. I know i am only 5% there and dont have a degree in audio engineering so most of the thousands of variables are still unknown to me. As someone mentioned above the home audio guys will not understand some things. I came from home audio seeing as we have childhood bedrooms before we have cars. I have heard several high end home audio systems and understand that square rooms with room treatments and having the ability of subwoofer placement are easier to deal with that in automotive interior when looking for soundstage, spaciality (if thats even a word) depth, tonality, instrument placement etc. Anyway, in my situation, I dont say that im SQ though I like to thing of myself as an audiophile. Being that I am in a relentless quest of having the likes of a band playing live on my dash. I dont know if this makes any sense but I understand where Kimo is coming from and wont be the next guy he knocks out at a show for throwing around the N or SQ word.

PS thanks for all the knowledge guys.

That's funny..... I don't think I have ever been at that point where I would of knocked someone out at a show. LOL

I appreciate that this thread is still going. It was my intention to raise awareness more than anything else. Most SQ guys I know came from the SPL side of things because as a kid getting into car audio it is all about the "BASS". Once you figure out or wake up to the idea that "BASS" is only 23% of the music and the remaining 77% is lacking in accuracy and passion you will push to achieve it. I am not even talking about at competition level at any matter but, just in general as a consumer.

I feel you on that Kimo. I started with the bass as well, but after being part of our schools Orchestra I was yearning for something with accuracy.

I wish there was more enthusiasm for SQ or SQL competition. Maybe its because I am on the east coast but most if not all competitions are SPL based. Which is interesting in its own right but not really what I am into.

Worried that its the norm and I should get used to all vehicles being geared towards that more and more. I know if I showed up with a car that was SQ oriented I wouldn't even be able to hear my setup much less demo it for people. Which is a little frustrating, but like I said it may be because of the area. MECA seems to be the only ones still doing SQ competition right?

It was like the DC Audio video...you can do 150db in car with not a huge crazy setup. However having something balanced and dynamic is a totally different deal. (I would put the really high level/installed SPL setups in the dynamic category)

There are a good amount of SQ guys on the East Coast. Like this forum you just need to be plugged in with them.

It is for the most part and older generation.

I use the analogy, SPL = Potheads, things are simple and just want it to go boom boom boom. SQ = Crackheads, its tweaking and more tweaking...

I haven't seen the terms timbre or linearity used here yet. By here, I mean all of SMD not just this thread...

I too hate people throwing around "SQ". I miss the days of epic SQ builds on the pages of CA&E.

Enter your vehicle in MECA or IASCA and you will hear those terms ... and a few more, I can assure you.

Like I said in another thread ... just because it sounds "good and clear" doesn't make it sound quality.
