Now I'm a super penny pincher when it comes to computer upgrades, because I know in 6 months it will most likely be worth 1/4 what I paid. Some of my upgrades I got free, some I paid for. I already had a 470 GTX so I decided to try to just upgrade that. Got a 580, wasn't happy with the performance increase. So I went the cheaper route, another 470 GTX. Now in older (not so good at SLI) games you wont notice SLI too much, maybe a 20% gain. This was wildly apparent when the 580 in Counter Strike: Source did about 750 FPS in the stress test. Same settings on the 470 SLI are around 550 FPS. Not looking good for the SLI setup. Fast forward to BioShock Infinite. 580 on max settings at 1920x1200 managed to pull an impressive 48 fps average. Not bad. 470's in SLI take it to pound town, and manage an even better 80fps. I will say that the 580, and the 680 (which the sli setup will keep up with in most games) use WAY less power, like 1/4 of the power of this setup. Is that to say that this isn't worth it? I got another EVGA 470 GTX on ebay for 75$. I feel like I got a steal. I also picked up a motherboard and new case while I was at it. Was trying to go small and powerful. boostin302 Posted October 9, 2013 Report Share Posted October 9, 2013 What CPU do you have? jumping to the 580 from a 470 might be causing a bottleneck issue with the CPU not being able to handle the process's right ( hope i worded that right) your PSU looks to be alittle on the small side for the 580. i know it calls for a 600 watt PSU but from personnal experince with the card, its not enough. how many amps is your 12v rail putting out.. usually want 20 amps on the 12v rail just to be safe. i jumped from a SLI 470 to a 580 with a 700 watt PSU and i had to upgrade my PSU. Now i'm running a SLI EVGA GTX 580 1.5Gb with a 1275 watt thermaltake PSU and they are loving every bit of it. Crysis 2 at 5780x1080 on Ultra, getting a avg of 61 FPS. ( I7 3770 OC'd to 4.1 Ghz.). boostin302 Posted October 9, 2013 Report Share Posted October 9, 2013 Also, are you able to go directly from the PSU to the graphics card? or are you using a splitter off the 4 pin molex's? if coming off the molex's, then id swap out the PSU for something better ( imo ). Reading up on it, the main difference is less power consumed on the 580vs480, benchmark scores are almost identical. Pulled them out and slapped the 2 780's in with the SAME PSU. Looking at it right now lol. The 580's are not power hogs.
