Best way to properly crossover my HT set up

Recommended Posts

I reallllllly want to build everything that I will be using, my only problem is I am stumped on how to properly have everything crossed over. I am going to be going for a 5.1 stereo. Now I could just go and buy center channel, 4 identical speaker cabinets for the corners, and and powered sub and hook up to a 5.1 home stereo. But I want it to be more than that. I want to buy the speakers for the center and corners speakers, along with the crossover for them. And build the boxes. My question is, how would I make sure they have a hpf on it so the midrange won't get damaged. Would that be built into the stereo? Or is there a unit I can purchase that will run inline somewhere to assist with that. I just don't want to invest the time and money into all this, then blow out all my damn mid ranged because the passive crossover is only good between the midrange and tweeter, but I have nothing cutting off the midrange from going into sub frequencies. Any help is greatly appreciated.

fuck the plating. look at what the main metal used is. you could buy unicorn blood plated terminals but if its just covering up dog shit, whats the point

I'll admit, half way through sanding that fiberglass in the rain and cold while I was all itchy I was definitely starting to question why i was doing this haha

I think it would be all on the passive crossovers at each speaker. What Receiver or amp are you going to be using?

Well I am not 100% on that at the monet, I want simplicity so I like the idea of a single 5.1 stereo. Don't have anything specific at the moment in mind.

What are you going to be using it for?

edit: n/m i see home theater just was confused by term stereo

Are you planning to go active or passive ? what's your budget? Good quality home theater crossovers can get expensive really fast if your wanting to go active. And if your wanting to go passive parts-express has a good selection I'm sure they would be willing to help you match them to the speakers you want to run.

That being said a lot of people's definition of "music" is a clipped 30 hz sine wave with some 80 IQ knuckle head grunting about committing crimes and his genitals.

im wanting to go passive, one of my questions though is if I do go passive what will act a hpf on the signal to a book shelf speaker so it doesn't play subsonic frequencies and get possibly getting damaged.

depending on the receiver you can set up each channel the lowest it will play so you should be fine, Some just have big or small speaker options you will have to see where the xover is set for that ... so for the speaker builds you just need a 2 way xover to separate the mids and highs... look at partsexpress.com they have tutorials.. and some h.t builds

There are some awesome tutorials out there man, have a look around

One thing ive always thought would be cool is to have all the passive crossovers in one place by the amp, all open crossovers on a single board, I recon that would look cool as fuck, just a ton of resistors and shit

like 4 or 5 of these http://www.parts-express.com/eminence-pxb2-2k5cx-2-way-speaker-crossover-board-2500-hz--290-635 on a single 'panel' with all the wires soldered onto the bottom of the board so they cant be seen ontop, throw it in some plexi and i recon that would be cool as hell

Good rule of thump is go by what fuse size is being used in these amps. The higher the more amperage it pulls, this is what I look at.

I'll stick a 300 amp fuse in a potato and sell it to you for $2k.

But to actually answer your question lol crossovers should be matched with drivers, so where ever you get your drivers from, they should be able to help with crossovers, also like mentioned above by someone else, some home theatre amps do have a hpf setting for the channels, but not all of them, adding another passive crossover if needed isnt hard and will be relatively inexpensive

considered going 3way? not sure what size cabs your wanting though, remember all 4 dont have to be the same especially the centre

I would like to do a 3 way. I don't want them to be big. The front left and right as well as my center will be around my triple monitor set up so I need to be conscious of the room in using. I want to keep the front and rear left /right the same, while keeping everything the same in the center except the woofer. In looking at 7-8 woofer and 4" mid with 1" tweets on the left and rights while have the same mid and tweeter with the center, and having a 5" woofer with the center
