Mixing batteries. Is it safe?

So I would like to replace my yellow top under my hood. It's a POS, a local battery warehouse has a nice deka for 95$ It's a lead acid battery, I have a kitneik 2400 in the back. So is it gonna be bad if I mix the batteries, if so then I'll save up for a deep cycle or something.

If it was two agm batts you would be fine but a lead acid and an agm is a no go.

I asked the guy if it was a agm and he looked at me weird lol so I assume it's lead acid so oh well lol

AGM/Gel Cells are also lead acid batteries. They're actually called valve regulated lead aid (VRLA) batteries and the appreciable differences between them and wet cell lead acid batteries are the facts that they can be mounted in any position other than inverted, they rest at slightly higher voltage and they tend to last longer than wet cells.

There is nothing at all unsafe about mixing wet cell and AGM lead acid batteries, nor is there anything particularly unsafe about running wet cell lead acid batteries inside a vehicle's cabin space (the Corvette battery was right behind the driver's seat in the early 70's, iirc).

If you do run wet cell lead acid batteries with VRLA lead acid batteries here's what will happen.... when the vehicle is not running, the wet cell lead acid batteries will rob a few tenths of a volt from the surface charge of the valve regulated lead acid batteries.

That's it. No explosions. No batteries fighting one another (heard that one recently). No zombie apocalypse.

Great info thanks man. Does it have a effect on the life of the batteries?

Charge each of them individually, let it overnight. What are the resting voltages? There's no safety issue with mixing batts in the manner you are talking about. But something you want to be aware of is that a difference in resting voltages will result in the better batteries being drained while the car is off

I've heard claims of it being possible, but that's just it, claims, I can't put forth proof.

As for the robbing of a little power from the Kenetik power cell with the engine off, IF such were ever a worry, a battery isolator would solve such an issue and besides, who wouldn't be installing one when running a starting battery and s system battery. If you play the system with the engine off quite regularly, it's sure suck to end up bumping the system at the bond fire, throwing back a few, then not be able to start the vehicle in the morning.

Guess that's what jumpers and buddies are for, that or it could be viewed as one effective way to stop a potential drunk driver. LOL

My agms rest at 13.05V my wetcell rests 12.8V. this is right after I fully charge them. I know the wet cell is going to bring down my agms to the wetcells voltage when mixing but im wondering if its going to shorten the life mixing them?
