Echo Posted January 21, 2014 Report Posted January 21, 2014 I'm planning out a build that's most likely going to pull more than what my stock electrical can keep up with, I'll be powering a Hifonics BRX2400.1. I'm already planning on doing the Big 3 but I'm a bit confused when it comes to adding another battery. I have a XS Power D1200 selected at the moment, and I'm wondering if I can just slap it into the back of my truck and wire it up without a problem? I've heard that it's bad to mix batteries, but I've also heard that it's not a problem. It's my first time stepping outside the barrier of what my stock electrical can keep up with, so I'm just needing a little help getting set off in the right direction.

SnowDrifter Posted January 21, 2014 Report Posted January 21, 2014 No. Here's why: Stock batteries are generally of the flooded variety - battery plates sit submerged in a pool of electrolyte. These batteries will typically rest around 12.7v if in peak condition. XS power batteries are what's called AGM batteries - there are glass mats inside the battery that are soaked with the electrolyte - think like a sponge holding water. These batteries will generally rest around 13-13.1v in good condition. That .3v difference in the battery's resting voltages mean that with the car off, the XS power battery will backfeed current into the stock battery, equalizing voltage down to the lowest potential which would be 12.7v. So really what you end up with is a deadish secondary battery since it will discharge itself any time the car is sitting. This is assuming best case scenario. It's not uncommon for couple year old stock batteries to be sitting at 12.4 or 12.5, then you really have a problem on your hands. What I'd start off with is replacing your stock battery completely with the biggest XS power battery you can fit (go outside with a tape measure). If you need more battery bank, then add a rear battery. Edit: I'll add: More important than battery design is resting voltage. I wouldn't mix a pair of AGMs if one was sitting at 13.1 and the other at 12.6.
