Help with slow computer

Recommended Posts

Recently started doing this. IO have a dell comp with window 7. When I start it up it takes forever and ever. When I click on something it take forever and sometimes it doesn't work. Tried a system restore and never worked, but never tried it in the safe mode. Also when I run in safe mode everything runs fast. I have ccleaner and the Advance system care 7 that I use. What can I do to fix this problem thankyou.
Also if you need any more info please let me know so that I can fix this problem. Also anyone have this other problem when they start there comp up. When I start it up the top ligh comes on then goes off than goes on again, but the comp doesn't go on. I gotta start it up a ciuple time again before the bottom light comes on. Anyone know what causes that? Thanks.

hmm.. there could be a plethora of issues...

Couple things i would look at first, run some virus scans, their could be some virus or malware stealing resources (explaining why the pc runs better in safe mode).
(it is never a bad idea to check for these, regardless of if you have any malware/virus)
(I scan with MicrosoftSecurityEssentials, Spybot Search and destroy, Combofix, and AVG)
After this i would check your startup programs, disable any that you dont use.
Check you computers resources (Ctrl-alt-del) and see if you are using more than 50% of your ram. If so, and you have no programs running, you should add more Ram, as your system is low on resources. (this also explains safe mode running faster)

You should also make sure your disk is defragmented. Advanced Sytem care has a defrag program that i like to use, run that and see how fragmented your disk is/isnt.

Baring none of these help, a reformat-reinstall usually helps restore a bunch of performance.

Another thing you can do that is a huge performance boost is to get a SolidStateDrive or SolidStateHybridDrive. Both of these options can be had for under $100 and give a huge performance boost.

Or.. your computer could be just a piece of junk..

what year/ model dell are you using? If you have a 2009 Dell inspiron.. then .... you might want to look into upgrading XD

1 do you have virus pertection software if jot buy one Norton or McAfee.

Run all the scans clear history, cookies, etc

See if that works if not reformat and reinstall Windows.

If dell or other bought comp call them up for software.

And reformat and reinstall software.

Then should be good to go

Quite possible that the drive is slowly failing, taking a long time to get the thing to boot up.

I would start with a fresh install of windows to see if it helps any with how well it runs and starts up for you.

I use excuses like this to make upgrades to the computer. lol

01 Ford focus ZX3

Pioneer AVH-X491BHS

PPI PC 4800.2

Morel Maximo 6.5" x2

If the computer is from Dell, and you have never done a restore, you should be able to make some recovery discs. With Windows 7, dell has a software on the computer that allows you to make either discs or a flash drive for recovery. With those you can fresh install windows any time and it should have all the programs from dell on there. The software might also have a driver and application section so you can make a disc for those if needed.

My normal "go-to" for a slow computer is to run MalwareBytes Anti-Malware, then a defrag with Ultra Defrag, then an SFC scan. Then remove all problem and junk software before running a virus/rootkit scan. That can be done with TDSSKiller and Sophos Virus Removal Tool.

I'm not sure about the link policy here, but I'll put them in here and if I need to I will remove them:

Malwarebytes AntiMalware: http://www.malwarebytes.org/mwb-download/

Ultra Defrag: http://ultradefrag.sourceforge.net/en/index.html?download

TDSSKiller: http://support.kaspersky.com/downloads/utils/tdsskiller.exe

Sophos Virus Removal Tool: http://www.sophos.com/en-us/products/free-tools/virus-removal-tool.aspx

And here is a guide on how to run SFC: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929833
