Using a higher RMS Rating Than your Sub?

Hey people. Uhhmm ok I have been wondering why people use for example 4000rms Daily on a 1500rms rated sub.. What are the pros and cons of using more rms on a sub?? And does it mean amp gains should be set differently??

They do it, because they know what they are doing. Technically, most companies rate RMS as the continuous power that a coil can take until THERMAL failue. This is opposed to music, which is dynamic in nature. But, depending on the box and tuning, half of RMS could destroy a sub mechanically.

I like that DSS rates their new subs at the power it takes to reach xmax in the spec'd enclosure.

Not trying to be harsh, but you've got a long way to go before you start worrying about that. Get your electrical in order. If you want to get louder, try different boxes before you go slapping more power on your woofers.

Getting the sub clean, un-clipped, un-distorted power is the first step and over powering a sub. Having proper electrical and good quality components is a must.

In most cases, Id take the persons gear/electrical into account that is saying "im putting 6k to this sub".

Thanks people I am using a DD9515 in a 5.5cube box with a 10inch port tuned to 38hz. Its been powered by a Sundown saz-3500d @ 2ohms. Issue is how do I know that I'm not giving the sub too much power??

that sub at @ 2ohm on that amp is perfect and your already overpowering. Make sure your gains are set clean and you have clean power.

I do think the box is a little big for that much power.

Yah I hear bigger box less power handling then smaller vise versa. But you know what confuses me is most people will put as much as 4000rms on their 9515, so I thought 2000rms is on the "less" power handling side so I did a big box.. Yah and issue is also getting clean power, can't tell the difference with bad gain. But I have my bass boost on 0 now (I hear its bad), gain just abit over half. Then h/u has sub level on full(+6), bass at 0, eq 50hz at +2, nd use volume at about 45 which is 3/4. Hope I'm safe?

I'm getting away with feeding my little ID8 subwoofer a considerable amount more than it's rated power, more than likely because my sealed enclosure is on the small side for the manufacturer's recomendation.
