Fuse rating question

That's what I thought too. So in my OP it means my mates amp has never drawn over 80 amps right? and that is why the fuse has never blown. So it could be that the electrical isn't supplying enough current, am I right??

Yep ...

cant pull what isnt there.

Also, amp ratings are never ever a constant. To see max draw, would mean MANY variables all came together at the same time. Which, (ask burp only peeps) is wicked hard to do.

How are is gains set? Maybe they aren't set high at all and he's not using the amps full power.

I'll admit, half way through sanding that fiberglass in the rain and cold while I was all itchy I was definitely starting to question why i was doing this haha

Yah could be cause its less than half if I am not mistaken. And I am not sure on the headunit setting. I will verify when I get the chance. Thanks

Fuses can pass more than their rated current for a good while if that current is not a surge. Also, the "rule of thumb" about fuses is not correct. You're looking at a DC circuit and assuming the AC circuit on the other side of it will follow DC laws and it will not. Also, as I think was already said, music is dynamic and the power supply inside the amp will bear the brunt of a lot of high current draw moments so, the fuse won't necessarily even see those surges.

In the end, that amp should only draw about 100 amps at full tilt boogie so an 80 amp fuse isn't likely to blow on music. It'll probably heat up but it shouldn't blow.

Lastly, gain setting at less than half means nothing. If the preamp is a true 4 volt signal then setting gain at half is a full power journey to clip city.

Also, Isn't the fuse supposed to be rated by the size of the wire it is connected to, not the component drawing the current?

If it's protecting the wire, yes. Ergo, if it's at the front battery or at the rear battery bank between those and the front. If it's going directly to the amp and not penetrating any grounded metal then it should be sized to protect the amp.

correct

example - I have an amp that accepts 4g wire.

I get a 4g / 1g block from toolmaker, or whatever......

You would still FUSE to the gear in question, NOT to the wire capability.

Yah would make more sense to fuse with the recommended fuse for the specific amp.
