How does Fs com into play when designing an enclosure?

Low Fs does come into play with all enclosures.

With vented enclosures (still 4th orders) a Low Fs will help with low-end extension. With a low tuning and a low Fs you can get a better group-delay and response.

Fs does also play into what enclosure "should" be more optimal by using the EBP formula of Fs/Qes.

It is considered x<50 is better for sealed, 50<x<100 for any, and x>100 for bass-reflex.

That also doesn't mean there aren't any exceptions.

Krakin's Home Dipole Project

Krakin, are you some sort of mad scientist?

I would have replied earlier, but I was measuring the output of my amp with a yardstick . . .

What you hear is not the air pressure variation in itself

but what has drawn your attention

in the two streams of superimposed air pressure variations at your eardrums

An acoustic event has dimensions of Time, Tone, Loudness and Space

Everyone learns to render the 3-dimensional localization of sound based on the individual shape of their ears,

thus no formula can achieve a definite effect for every listener.

You better look at the whole parameter set rather than a single one, if only one was needed you would only get that one to work with.

Yup cant just work off the FS rating. Had a 15 nightshade with extra hard spiders, pretty sure the fs was well over the 40's,i played down to 26hz no problem while magaging 141db and even a small hair trick. Enclosure was tuned to 30hz.

Current system:

1997 Blazer - (4) Customer Fi NEO subs with (8) American Bass Elite 2800.1s

Previous systems:

2000 Suburban - (4) BTL 15's and (4) IA 40.1's = 157.7 dB at 37 Hz.

1992 Astro Van - (6) BTL 15's and (6) IA 40.1's = 159.7 dB at 43 Hz.
