New Hardware: Reinstalling OS/Backing up files w/ Partitioning

Recommended Posts

Just to keep this simple and easy I'm just gonna copy and paste my post from overclock.net

Alright my beloved OCN-ers, been a long while since I've did a PC build. Been in the car audio/automotive culture world pretty heavily for the past few years with some steady PC gaming thrown in aswell.

So I bought a ASUS M5A97 and a AMD FX-8320, 8gb's of ddr3 over blackfriday. I know that I will have to reinstall windows 7 for all of my components to get working since I'm replacing my mainboard.

Issue is, I'm on a somewhat shared family PC with a lot of files that I would rather not lose. I am guessing that I would simply create a new partition (F:/?) and put all my backup files on it?

Not completely sure how I go about doing that so I'm asking you guys lol. Or if I'm going about it the right way.

Do you have other hard drives to use as backup for all your files?

I just copy and paste everything on my external drive before reformatting and making a fresh install.

Don't forget to backup all your bookmarks by synching them.

Not really, I do but it's already full of backup stuff...

Might be able to borrow one though. My neighbor is a PC tech and my mom takes care of his Alzheimer ridden mother at night so I'll have her ask him.

Is your C:\ drive the only hard drive you have in the PC?

ive installed and re-installed os's like a lot. i started out on a ti-99/4a. so bear with me.

just do a fresh install on a new hard drive with the old drive not hooked up.

then hook up the old drive and go to you bios setup and make sure your new drive is the first in the list of boot devices.

then, after all that is done, you can copy over what you want from the old drive, pitcures and stuff will be in the "users\..." folder.

make sure the old drive is not hooked up at all during the whole start to finsih or else windows will use thr old drive as the Boot drive and it will just cause more headaches than it is worth.

good luck

That sounded complicated duck. lol. Literally, if you have a second HDD inside, put everything on there and just reinstall over the main HDD. Then do a disk cleanup to get the older windows files wiped away. I just did it yesterday. I wanted to reinstall so I moved everything that I wanted to keep over. Then reinstalled and wiped. I use my second HDD for all my storage though, only thing that is on my C:\ is the OS, installed programs obviously, and any games that I play. Everything else is on the secondary one.
