bigsausagepizza
I'm still running an old component based setup. I like simplicity, I don't need tons of controls and settings, although a remote volume control would be nice. Thorens TD166 mkii turntable -> NAD 1020 preamp -> Hafler DH-200 amp Real solid setup, very low THD (less than 0.02% at 100wpc), can play loud all day with no problems. No special features, no remote, just straight pure signal all the way through. I've been thinking about picking up a minidsp for some room correction, but at the volumes I listen I'm not sure it would have too much of an effect. aculous
what S15 said, also I am guessing you actually mean a receiver or AVR as they're abbreviating them now. Also you can do some cool stuff with MiniDSP but for ease of use I would go with a receiver. Brands: Yamaha, NAD, Marantz, Onkyo, Emotiva (if you have the scratch they have some great stuff) If you only want to power a set of speakers you can run amps and pre-amps of course but for home audio the receiver has kinda taken over those duties for most people. But if you have nice set of speakers and not a home theater in a box I would go with a receiver+amplifer setup. I would stay away from Pioneer. I've owned two (elite and non-elite) and two other friends have bought them and there have been issues with the three that were not Pioneer Elite series. I used to recommend them a lot but I think quality control has gone down or something in the past 8-10 years. Depends on what you are trying to do with it as well. I am finding out the simpler the setup the better. I run a receiver that has full HDMI capabilities with PCM audio and full Dolby and THX support.
