Bought a aftermarket HO alt, and it only does 100amp??

I mean I understand that an alt only puts out current when a load is present. but ive always been kinda grey on how it works...

I have always thought of it like this:

the alternator will supply current to support the load, and when it cannot support the load further aka maxed out, the battery supply is used to pick up the slack..

so given a 300a + 50a for the car load, if you have a 300a alt, your reserve is responsible for the remaining 50a, and if you have a few d3100s, your voltage level should be pretty decent for a little while.

Where i get confused, is say given that same 350a load, with a 300a alt. When you present the load, you only get 170a on the charge wire..

Lets assume you correctly clamped all the charge wires, either the alt cannot do more than 170a or you dont really have a load larger than 170a.

Or really say given that 300a alt, and you present a 150a load, you should have ZERO voltage drop.. 14.4v, but sometimes you get voltage drop... even any isnt ok imo. if you drop to 13.5, something is wrong.

Does playing below tuning, or clipping draw a shit ton more current? Or am i missing something?

this is old...

One alt.... SINGER. DC 10k.

Ive seen 6 "My after market only does 50 amp" messages just today.

Make it work...

shit.... If your voltage is staying "UP" then the alt wont do nothing........ just saying.

i dont get what you are saying. explain?

cool vid. is that fluke clamping the alt? if so, nice:)

Hes saying ppl say my alt is doing dick, but they dont actually provide a sufficient load to make the alt produce more current. Why would an alt output 300a when the load only requires 200a.. it wouldnt. So its not the a bad alt putting out 100a less than rated, the load simply isnt 300a...

So the video shows a dc clamp on the alt, and as he turns it up aka increases the load, the alt put out more current.. maxing out at around 280a, where you can see the voltage drop into reserve at around 12.5v..

Obviously a DC 10k draws alot more amperage than the 300-350a that his alt does, so his reserve must be pretty decent inorder to maintain 12.5 for a decent amount of time.

Thats pretty much how it works and should work, but ive seen my fair share of alts acting weird, voltage drop at less than max loads, and its always fishy to fight the manufacturer saying my alt doesnt put out, when theyll just say it does, and im wondering what other factors may come into play.

Yes..

Fluke is always running. I have a clamp that runs full time. All time.

ONE one alt,.. i cant do both...

Ive seen HUGE number of " but my new alt only does 60AMP"

What my goal was here..... was showing "idle, nothing," VS "A drag/pull"

thats all.....

Nothing special bruh... :)

just curious :) nice video. i didnt have sound thats why i ask. but i assume most of what id hear is distorted mic lol. that alt is stout. was that the hairpin clamped?

also what attachment is that for the clamp? i want

This is the conventional bro. Hot, at 1200rpm, on music. So, not to bad.

The hair pin is around 240, all the time..lol. Idle, or at rev. Its a brute, but wont "peak" as well. But, man, it does 200 at 500rpm..lol.

Anyway, yes, this is a "attachment" you plug into the fluke meter, and run on milivolts. It will do its magic, and show you amperage. Its dope. I love it.

ill show ya a vid, and pics my friend. ;)

and, i just got 2 emails, saying "i put my high out put alt in, and it only does 55amp" or what ever. It wont do rated all day... ya know?

Anyway... ill post another vid and or pics here on the attachment. ;)

I know you like this elec stuff as much or more than me. Hold tight. I just started the turd to heat up.
