Rev. Wrath
It doesn't have to be a kit. I can piece it together if needed but leave the different pieces with links if you can and preferably from the same place. dual zone is a sweet bonus. Does that mean I can run each area at the same time seperately? We have a pool area also. Yeah it's basically like you can turn each zone on and off. You have zone 1 that is your full on home theater setup then you have 2 more speaker outputs for zone 2 which you could run directly to speakers or to a separate amplifier if you wanted to get a little crazy with it. I think it's pretty much designed for a patio/ pool area, but you could use it for a second room or whatever.
KiKaZz74
OK so let's see if I can simplify it so I'm not confusing myself and you guys. which is gonna be better? 2.1 or 5.1/7.1? Movies and gaming for the most part. For $500 best I can get in whatever case Dual zone is bonus but not needed. OK fire away. So far it's that onkyo s3700 kit or the s3500. aculous
Dayton makes great stuff and a decent price. Remember you would need a receiver in addition to this. http://www.parts-express.com/51-home-theater-package-12-powered-subwoofer--300-696 or a soundbar http://www.parts-express.com/speaker-bar-and-10-subwoofer-package--300-637 You can build amps too from partsexpress or buy one to power all of these for you need the processing that a receiver will giver you. Go 5.1 you don't really need more then that. or if you're handy theres a bunch of places for speaker kits, usually where you buy the drivers and crossovers and then you build the enclosure. partsexpress madisound solen.ca CSS (creative sound systems or something they make custom drivers and kits) GR Research (great place to find affordable kits)
bigsausagepizza
You could do a modest DIY 2.1 system on $500. It would blow any store bought systems in that price range out of the water sound quality wise. There are LOTS of DIY options, here is one suggestion: Two of these - http://www.diysoundgroup.com/speaker-kits/osmtm-flat-pack.html One of these for the sub - http://techtalk.parts-express.com/showthread.php?221133-Whole-buncha-sub-designs-for-the-RSS210HF-4 That leaves you about $140 for wood and something to power the mains with. I'd go 2.1 if your budget is only $500. I'd rather have great sounding front mains and sub and no rears than mediocre 5.1. I'd rather do something simple really well than do something complicated but low quality. mmmmm, Paul Carmody!!! I've been trying to get multiple friends to get a set of overnight sensations so I can build them. I haven't heard them, but I guarantee they'll blow away any HTIB setup. I have a similar sized room and I don't miss much not having rears, well positioned 2-channel provides plenty of imaging. 2008 Subaru WRX STI K&N Typhoon Intake Invidia Polished Stainless 3" turbo back with cat Cobb Accessport Dyno tune from Kaizen Tuning 320awhp 330ft-lb awtq MTX 421D Sub amp American Bass SQ900 Highs/Mids amp Sundown Audio SD-2 10 D4 JL Audio XR653-CS 3-way Components 3sixty.2 Second Skin Damplifier Pro Custom fiberglass wheel well enclosure Transmission Line quasi-floor enclosure http://www.stevemeadedesigns.com/board/forum/13-member-rides-builds-show-off-your-whip-show-off-your-system/ Bill Fitzmaurice TLAH line-array hifi towers 9 Goldwood 4" mids (each) 12 Goldwood 1/2" tweeters (each) NAD 1020 Preamp MiniDSP 2x4 Balanced processor Thorens TD166mkII Turntable Hafler DH-200 Amplifier http://www.stevemeadedesigns.com/board/topic/192638-line-array-hifi-tower-build/ https://www.facebook.com/HolyMountainGlass

I've build several of Paul Carmody's designs and they all perform very, very well. Needless to say I'm a bit of a Carmody fan-boy. Here is a link to his site: https://sites.google.com/site/undefinition/diy To the OP, if you don't want to mess around with DIY designs, I don't particularly blame you. They are definitely more work, however the additional work can be very rewarding. The additional effort will definitely result in additional performance. You just have to decide what your priorities are. aculous
check out Curt Campbell, believe he actually did the first Overnight Sensation not Paul but I could be wrong. http://speakerdesignworks.com/ and Meniscus Audio (their Swope L/R and Center speaker kits are awesome) +2 on bigsausagepizza go 2.1 I actually run a Left Center Right Sub with no rear fill and it works great. Although keep in mind that most mixes (dolby/thx/etc) use the center the most.
KiKaZz74
Only reason I'm leary on 2.1 is I don't have the room for the fronts. The TV is like 48" wide. The fireplace will be 54" most likely, the door to window space is like 60 something inches. I don't have room for them on the floor. I could mount on wall possibly. I'll get a pic and exact measurements. but I'm thinking the fronts just might not have room being that big.
