Due to my ignorance in digital music formats, not understanding that mp3's weren't good for quality until i joined this forum, etc., I have a few questions for some of you more knowledgeable folks.

Can you decompress an mp3? I have a few thousand compressed music files in mp3 and AAC formats, and im definitely not going to take the time to go searching for uncompressed replacements for all of them. If there was a way to repair those files while decompressing them/converting to a WAV format, I would like to know. I understand that just a simple format conversion doesnt bring back what has been lost, but if there IS a way to do it and gain back everything that is lost.....

I do not buy CD's. i prefer to have my music digitally stored and play it all via usb on shuffle, rather than listen to only one artist & genre for 12-20 songs. Where am i able to download clean, uncompressed WAV music for future use? Can i setup my itunes to download the songs i purchase in a WAV format?

I do not have a sound quality setup, but i would like to start using quality music (yes, even though all of the music i already have is not and wont be).

Thanks in advance for any helpful answers.

Nope, once that information is lost you can't add it back.Converting them to a format like wav will just make the file bigger while doing nothing for the quality itself. As to downloading, I got no clue other than something like Pono and most sites like it generally aren't gonna have the biggest selection. With the way most recordings are done nowadays things are so distorted and clipped to hell and back that it really doesn't matter as to the format it's in.

That's the impression I got from all of the crazy googling I did before posting this. Just figured I'd give one more answer for the next person asking it I guess.

That being said a lot of people's definition of "music" is a clipped 30 hz sine wave with some 80 IQ knuckle head grunting about committing crimes and his genitals.

I think amazon may have lossless Codecs available.

However, I believe you may be able to buy a CD and get the files off. Don't know how you'll do it, but I know there are ways.

Krakin, are you some sort of mad scientist?

I would have replied earlier, but I was measuring the output of my amp with a yardstick . . .

What you hear is not the air pressure variation in itself

but what has drawn your attention

in the two streams of superimposed air pressure variations at your eardrums

An acoustic event has dimensions of Time, Tone, Loudness and Space

Everyone learns to render the 3-dimensional localization of sound based on the individual shape of their ears,

thus no formula can achieve a definite effect for every listener.

A lot of cds are horrible quality too these days.

If the music is recorded poorly in the first place the cd sucks too.

Exactly why I'm not too worried about it. Just wanted to know for the knowledge base. Especially since my music consists of compressed files. By no means am I looking for pure SQ. Just curious about all of the options. I'll take a look at that video you posted whenever I get home on my laptop.

hdtracks.com is a good resource. Theres a couple places that specialize in HD audio tracks only but yea if the original is shit you're screwed. (also mobile fidelity sound labs is good)

Cds are your friend imho, you can rip the cd in wav format which is the easiest in my opinion but you can also rip it to FLAC for example. Lossless audio formats are very close to a 1:1 rip so you get a very true representation of the cd audio. But thats only as good as your encoder, if the encoder does weird things, like normalize your audio or something like that its not going to turn out right.

Also everything I have dled from Amazon has been crap...I love amazon but I have not be impressed. I can look at the bit rate again but I think most of the stuff I dled before was like max 192bit rate which is supposedly cd quality but eh I have no idea how they are encoding things but it doesn't sound anywhere near what it should. Not sure about a HD Audio option that would be awesome. I'll have to go back and check.

It's funny how companies always claim it's cd quality.

The one reason I buy mp3's is I typically don't like every song on an album so it saves me money by not buying the whole album if I don't like it.

Who remembers carrying around a couple giant stuffed to the max cd holders?

Or 500 disc cd changers?

I've been thinking about buying cds again though because when I pop one in even with shitty speakers there is a clear difference.

lol...so I am currently rocking a 120 cd binder and a headunit from the late 90s.
