Worlds Best Boombox - Custom Pearl Orange Diamondboxx - CLEAN and LOUD

Recommended Posts

I love the aluminum faceplate, and heatsink idea.

Any plans to offer just the amp? I would love a mini-amp or preamp that puts out 40wpc thats clean and undistorted and has that look. More and more people are looking at headphone amps too.

Hope this catches on more!

I would be in for a D'Amore designed headphone amp all day.

That being said a lot of people's definition of "music" is a clipped 30 hz sine wave with some 80 IQ knuckle head grunting about committing crimes and his genitals.

It's bi-amped.... And probably designed for assembly.

To make it a consumer ready product it needs a complete redesign.

Buy a LM3886 and a toroid, enjoy your great sound on a budget :)

I've looked at gainclones and pass lab designs before, Also the ESP and tripath designs. I don't feel comfortable with my testing abilities yet to design a noise free distortion free amp. I am learning though. EE is a pain, and really the amp is not even the expensive part, its usually the power supply.

Edit: I could have said this simpler. I trust Tony D to design something of quality. I would pay for that because it saves me time and I enjoy being able to support people who do quality work. Sometimes the wallet can...sometimes not.

eBay has plenty of pre-made boards. Some DIYaudio members sell their own boards, which are a bit more expensive but some (not all) are better than the eBay boards.

Luckily, the LM3886 is a very popular chip; there are some good engineering guides on how to design the 'perfect' PCB.

It's really satisfying to receive your own PCB's, it's like holding a new-born child you designed yourself ;p.

I guess this discussion is a bit off-topic, so if you want to discuss some more you can open a new topic or send me a PM.

Great product! Props to Tony for developing it. Audio done right; active crossover, subsonic filter, thick enclosure, high quality drivers.

I can understand the discussion about the price, but quality costs money. Mass produced injection molded speakers with D-cells may be cheaper, but that's reflected in the sound. Judging by the cycle life claim he is using LiFePO4? Very nice. Is Tony on this forum?, I would like his explanation on the choice for class A/B. That stuff eats away battery while it doesn't sound much better than a well-designed class D.

I laughed when I saw:

Two 2 inch (51mm) Helmholtz resonators, tuned to 45 Hz[/size]

In the description

Because 'ports' didn't sound fancy enough? B)

Thank you sir!

The choice of Class A/B was based on two things - Sound quality and idle current. These are both suprior on a class a/b amplifier. Advantages of class D amplifer are size and better effiencency under some conditions, not all. Size was not a concern as the size requirement for the woofer airspace was the determining factor there. Efficency was a wash. So Class A/B it is, and it sounds great!

Just trying to give Dr. Helmholtz some love and respect :good:

Idle current shouldn't differ too much I think? What are your findings?

The main thing is that class AB uses about 4 times more power with music at max volume.

Waste of battery IMO. Class D is also much more suited for mass manufacturing (SMD, sinking via the PCB).

I saw on your FB page that you were searching soldering techs down to 0603. There's no way your handassembling this (right?).

Do you mind sharing some internals, maybe via PM, I always like to see the engineering work of others.

Are you trying to tell one of if not the best amp designers in the world how to design his product? Edited by Broke_Audio_Addict

What? I'm just sharing my knowledge. I'm interested in his design choices, so I ask questions and have a conversation.

I really respect the guy because of what he has done. Because he knows what he is doing, I'm trying to understand his design choices.

Maybe it just came off the wrong way too me. Edited by Broke_Audio_Addict

No problem, maybe I should add more smileys and compliments to my posts :P

It's also a wrong attitude, in my humble opinion, to assume that Tony (or any other knowledgeable guy) knows everything.

I'm sure he has learned quite some things here on the forum. A forum is meant to share thoughts.

Maybe, just maybe, I'm telling him something he didn't know.

Not a chance.

And he's done the teaching around here not the learning.
