Wicks
The Viton rubber sheet still hasn't arrived yet. So I decided to start in on the 2nd amp and swap what I could. I popped off the rail bars on this one and looky here, this one uses rubber instead of foam Whew BUT...look at these solder joints under the board. These joints are for the two coils in the power supply. WOW....it looks like somebody hacked the shit out of this board on a previous refurb. I really hope this want powered up like this... I used some flux-off and board cleaner to remove all the residue grime, which helped a lot. Then I added some solder flux to the joints. The flux helps further clean out the gunk and help the solder adhere to the wire and the board VIA. ...and BOOM! much much better. I was worried that this one wasn't fixable but it looks like there is hope. The power cables on this one are straight soldered to the circuit board. I don't have access to something that can reflow a solder joint that large, without potentially creating more heat damage then I'd like to. So I may have to just couple in some extra wire into the existing cables. Swapped in the new 3300uF caps. Swapped in the rest of the large electrolytics. Next up, all new FETs around the outside of the board... Wicks
New FETs on the 2nd amp completed. Here are the new opamps. Ready to assemble. Fired it up!!! No magic smoke Consistent idle of about 1.22A. So for fun, as since this is an OLD amp, I pulled out my IR camera to look around the board for any hot spots. Here the focus is on a power resistor in the power supply. You can see its max temp at 134C. Rather toasty but that's what power resistors do... Here's the toroid in the power supply. Max of 61C. Here are the new op-amps in the input section: Humming along at 45C. I don't have the right connector interface to connect these 8ga cables to a power supply, plus they need to be lengthened, so I'll need to come up with something before I can really pull some current though this baby. Wicks
Finally had a chance to power up the 2nd amp and pull some current through it. 340W @ 4ohms before my bench-top power supply ran out of juice. Seems pretty stable so far. I messed with the "EQ" button on the side too, just to see what it did. I would stay away from that button.... It adds about 12dB of gain at my test frequency of 40Hz. So if your gains are already set and you hit this button.........you're going to clip like CRAZY. Wicks
Whew..... 2nd amp is DONE. Sadly my bench power supply can't support this beast so we'll have to do a live test. The amp's owner has an AMM-1 so maybe we'll have to play around with that This post sent with 100% recycled electrons. 2004 BMW M3Mechman 280A 2 - XS Power XP30001 - XS Power D375 500F of Maxwell SuperCaps (soon to be 1000F) iPadMini2Dash mounted O-scopeAudison bitOne (Remote DRC MP) Highs Amp - PPI Art A404 Hertz HSK130 (HSK165 waiting...)
