modify ALT for increase voltage

Recommended Posts

I have wondered why the voltage sense wire on the alt is reading voltage close to the alt? On industrial manufacturing equipment, we run the regulator sensing wire on 24VDC power supplies all the way out to the load to monitor load voltage. This is done because the voltage at the load is what's important and compensates for power wiring losses.

The car has too many loads to monitor, so to save money you sense at the battery.

Thinking is the root of all problems...

You ALWAYS get what you pay for.

Any gain is in your head.

Also, just dialing up voltage, isn't key. You want amperage also. A alt that does 19 volt, but 50 amp isn't a boss.

THIS.

People get so concerned with voltage and in the end, it's only one small variable that is actaully impacting the power you're getting.

true, but more voltage = less amperage = more efficient

Half a volt isn't going to do anything. Use 16v cells and charge at 18 plus. Ya.

we should be able to move the sense wire to the amp or atleast rear battery

extend all the wires going to the front battery to the rear bank and make that the main bank and the front battery would become the backup bank... just like in a battery relocation kit but you keep the front battery last in the chain and see what happends..... experimentation is the goal here and somebody should play this game and report back with their findings

You could ditch the front battery. The problem is that the alternator is too far away from the rear batteries.

with the right size cable I dont think the alt would care how far away it is... since with the conventional setup the alt is still the same distance from the second bank and a 1/0 wire will still be able supply the current and see the true voltage drop..... its pretty much the same thing as the GM cars that have the battery under the back seat with another added 2 feet

The alt can't see any voltage drop that the 1/0 causes because the front battery is keeping the voltagae at the alt up.

the alt sees the battery with the least load if its up front. putting front battery farthest causes it to do even less because it would have two runs of cable to go through.
