is non-hairpin h/o alternator worth it?

Hey,

After doing a lot of research by reading posts from users in this forum i have heard a lot of talk about the benefits of hairpin alternators - so being in need of a h/o alternator i tried hard to get a hairpin high output alt for my car but unfortunately none are available.

Only an sx or sx-i style is available (320amp)

not sure which one it is..

my question is.. what are the downsides to having an sx-i or sx alt compared to a hairpin (xp) alternator?

will the sx/sx-i lifespan last much shorter than the xp hairpins?

what would be the max rms wattage i could run with a sx/sx-i 320amp alternator?

finally.. would you guys invest in a sx/sx-i style alternator if no hairpin/xp's were available for your car???

please give reasoning behind your answer - this will help me decide on whether to get one or not.

Thank you

When i bought my alt, the only option for a hairpin out there was like $900 from DC. I talked to singer, and i got a 3 phase for less than half DC's price.

Decision seemed like a no-brainer to me. It worked fine for my multiple 3500wrms sub stages, 5k, and 7k.

I sent my alt back to him to get refreshed like 2 months back, and he managed to gain me another 55A at peak and like 50 at idle iirc.

3 phases are less efficient, so cause more drag on the engine... heat affects them more than a 6 phase... they dont do *as* well at idle on larger output models... along with other little things.

However, dont let that deter you from getting one. If its all thats available, then get it. Ive had mine for like three years, and am happy.
