School project help.

Recommended Posts

I am in a electrical and fluid power systems class at school. We are doing a small group project that has to combine electrical, pneumatic, or hydraulics. Needs to combine 2 of the 3. Small budget of like $75-100. He doesn't want to see another can crusher. Give me some ideas guys. Struggling hard to think of something. Electro-.... Seems easiest but from there we are stumped. Let's see what you guys can come up with. Cheap. Kinda simple.

Build a miniature hydro electric dam that lights a light bulb or a school mascot or something

Could package it up as soething that you can set in a stream as a portable phone charger or something similar

Or do you need something that has a mechanical function that performs a physical task like moving an object or picking something up?

How would I do the hydro part though? A well expansion tank? Just trying to do something kinda simple and not huge.

Get an emergency tire pump (12v), an air storage tank, a pressure release valve, a pressure transducer, some pvc pipe and a tee, and some marbles.

Make an automatic marble air gun. Pump builds pressure in the tank, when set psi is reached the release valve vents. Valve is located in a horizontal length of pvc pipe with a vertical piece tee'd in. The vertical piece contains a stack of marbles (magazine). Weigh marbles and use physics to calculate theoretical velocity.

EDIT: change marbles to ping pong balls if safety is a concern, like this will be demonstrated inside a class room.

Can do the same thing with a 2 liter bottle, air spot bbs, and an air compressor too.

Vacuum cleaner, hose hooked to exhaust port. Use the air pressure to demonstrate how pressure over area equates to force. Can lift your friend up with a wood board and a few garbage bags underneath it. Or trim said garbage bags and make a hovercraft. Could grab some concrete form tubes and make rudimentary pistons

Could make a heating coil out of some wire, car battery or two, use it to make steam and use the steam pressure to do something. Could grab a piece of PVC pipe and a valve, use it to shoot ping pong balls or something. I'll add that it wouldn't be a bad idea to get a pressure release valve like they use in air compressors so you don't have a bomb on your hands
