I just thought i would check out square subs because i wanted to increase cone area with out taking up more room on the face of my sub box design because i have a lot of air space on a relativity small face.

Does anybody know of any decent square subwoofers other than the mtx thunder, mtx jackhammer, kicker solo x, kicker solo baric, hifionics brutus, lanzar max, and pyle red label. also why are they so uncommon?

Square was a gimmick to trick people not in the know about how SPEAKERS work that wanted something different, to put it simply the xmax of square subs is limited due to the shape being unable to equally disperse itself at the surround (which results in cone distortion at higher excursion), so while a square 12 (for example) has more cone area then a regular round 12 the xmax is limited compared to what a round speaker can achieve, and compared to subs in the same price range (for the added bump in price to go square) you will always be able to find a round speaker that out preforms a square for the same price.

Youd be better off just going up to 18's over a square 15 if your worried about cone area.

The old Kicker Solar Barics were the only ones I liked back in the say. The original Kicker Comps (round drivers) were my favorites. Just saying.

For the Mose part now adays ... Round drivers are normally the way to go (like most have already said.

Best of luck with your search brother !!!

hmm yes i have though about this that must be why not many companies are making them. however if you simply make the corners able to stretch flex extend whatever you want to term it i don't see that the movement would be limited by the surround and there is the mtx kackhammer maybe it is just a gimmick but most people don't spend 10,000 on a sub and with a gimmick you want as many people to fall for it as possable.

Not one person has ever paid $10k for that sub, it's just a marketing thing like hey look what we can do.

That being said a lot of people's definition of "music" is a clipped 30 hz sine wave with some 80 IQ knuckle head grunting about committing crimes and his genitals.

but thats just it, it's physically IMPOSSIBLE to design a square cone to exceed a certain amount of xmax, even if you somehow pumped up the surround some way in the corners a square cone is always going to begin to physically distort long before a round one will, it's about evenly distributing the load from the center (voice coil) out, which is something a square speaker (or for that matter anything not round) can NEVER do.
